Tip of the Week:  Get Your Green News! Stay Informed

Having a green career means taking an active role in the green economy and the management of your own career.

In this ever-evolving economy it doesn’t work to insulate yourself within your own industry or profession. You must keep your finger on the pulse of the entire green economy.

One of the best ways to stay informed is to read a variety of blogs on a regular (daily, if possible) basis. You’ll want to create bookmarks or set up an RSS fee for blogs that cover different beats within the green movement. Scan the following blog descriptions to get started. Each week check out another blog to see what it adds to your understanding of the current state of the green economy.

As you read your selected blogs your overriding goal is to:

  • Know the key players in your industry and beyond, and track their activities.
  • Understand the political climate and how it is shaping the green economy.
  • Discover opportunities to take actions to move the green economy forward.
  • Take stock of the current state of the green economy.
  • Educate yourself about current and upcoming technologies and scientific findings.

Industry-Specific Blogs

If you’ve already discovered your green niche or have an interest in a couple of industries, find a blog/newsletter about the activities in that industry.

Use your favorite industry as a keyword with “blogs” in a search engine to pull up industry specific blogs that match your interests.

General Green Blogs

General news sources can provide you with a first look at news stories that impact the green economy and the environment. A good place to start if you want an overview source.

Political Blogs

The health of the green economy, and its very existence, depends on the political climate. Reading a politically minded blog with a green emphasis can help you understand the political issues that are, or may be, impacting the future of the green economy and your green career.

Green Business Blogs

Tracking the comings and goings of green businesses will give you a sense of the issues facing businesses, current trends, and where investment dollars are going.

Green Economy Activist Blogs

Another important perspective to track are the activist groups that are doing all they can to propel the green economy for all.

Environmental Blogs

Although your target career may not have a direct impact on the environment, global warming is. Track a blog/newsletter in this category to discover how actions and political decisions are affecting the flora, fauna, and land.

Green Consumer Blogs

You may also want to browse a blog that’s aimed at green consumers. You may identify trends or needs that could influence your own career.

CA Academy of Science Green Building: We previewed the new Academy of Science in San Francisco last week before the Sept 27th grand opening. As the daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter of San Franciscans, I spent quite a bit of time at this museum/aquarium as a child. It was wonderful to be there to celebrate the rebirth of this organization that has been inspiring people to learn about the planet since 1853! Check out our photos of the new green building.
