Tip of the Week: Green Economy in the News!

My internal green career trends bells have been ringing off the hook this week! With news of the President-Elect’s goals and plans in the wind, ramifications for the green economy have been front and center. Although we won’t know how all of this unfolds for a few months, it’s great to see these issues getting the attention of the future administration.

Executive Orders

The Washington Post reports that Obama advisers have been researching actions and executive orders implemented during the Bush administration to identify those that Obama will reverse. At this point the list includes at least 200 Bush actions and executive orders. A number of these pertain to the environment and climate change.

During the campaign, President Elect Obama stated his opposition to the Bush administration’s actions that blocked the state of California from creating its own regulations for emissions from vehicles. Sixteen other states would like to modify their own emissions rules and have been stopped by the Bush administration. Of course this goal regarding the limits of vehicle emissions won’t be well-received by the auto manufacturers or their lobbyists. In January, Obama said "Effectively tackling global warming demands bold and innovative solutions, and given the failure of this administration to act, California should be allowed to pioneer."

Obama has also indicated he will use an executive order to declare that CO2 emissions from factories are a danger to human welfare. This decision would be in agreement with the EPA task force recommendation made December 2007. This decision will give more priority to reducing carbon emissions.

New National Energy Council

A number of Obama's transition advisers advocate setting up a National Energy Council that would facilitate a coordinated effort regarding global climate change policymaking. Having such a council would also give climate change issues the attention of the White House. Senator Hillary Clinton made this part of her platform as well.

Stimulus Packages

In her press conference after the election, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) affirmed her desire to incorporate green jobs into the economic stimulus plan that will be addressed in the lame-duck session of Congress later this month or after the new administration takes office in January.

“Central to the job creation issue is the strong piece for rebuilding the infrastructure of America, again, in a way that reduces our dependence on foreign oil and that creates good green jobs in America.”

In terms of assistance for struggling automakers, President-Elect Obama has indicated that his support for both short term and long term assistance depends on the automakers’ willingness to make cleaner, more energy-efficient vehicles. Successfully supporting the automakers in making the transition to more environmentally friendly vehicles would help the country to meet its goals to cut emissions.
