Highlighted Event

Announcing a new monthly teleclass series: Green Career Focus: Gain Clarity, Get Focused, Get Results

August Call: Where Do Your Skills Fit in the Green Economy?

  • As you try to figure out your target green career, are you concerned you don't know all of your options?
  • Are you wondering where you might use your skills in the green economy?
  • Do you have a map of the entire green economy to make sure you are headed down the right career path?

When we first started Green Career Central in April 2007, our Founder, Carol McClelland, PhD, created a green job guide with reviews of over 50 green job boards. In researching that first product she realized that each job board had a different system for organizing their green jobs. After spending many hours scanning job boards, Carol started developing a map of the green economy as a way to understand how to categorize the green job board reviews.

Now, over two years later, Carol continues to evolve her map of the green economy as new industries and technologies develop and mature. Every time she describes her green career map to audiences they thank her for bringing new clarity to the evolving green economy.

“Carol did an outstanding job of dissecting the “Green Economy” into technologies and career paths that were tangible and easily understood. For the first time, I have a clear understanding of how my experience is truly relevant and valuable in the new economy.”
--Jim, a recent audience member at one of Carol's presentations

In this content-rich teleclass, Carol shares her latest map of the green economy. With this map in hand you'll be able to pinpoint the areas of the green economy that are most attractive to you. You'll also have more assurance that you aren't missing out on opportunities you don't know about.

During the call you will:

  • Discover how to organize green industries into six industry categories.
  • See examples of industries that fall into each industry category.
  • Find out how each industry category has a slightly different culture that may influence your career choices.
  • Uncover functions that can be done in nearly any industry category.
  • Receive a chart that illustrates all that we discuss.

Tip of the Week: Signs of Momentum in the Green Economy

Question: Is the green economy the next big bubble? Or in other words...Is it worth training for jobs in the green economy or will they vanish by the time we are ready to go to work?

Our take on this question: Although we aren’t economists, politicians, or psychics, we have been tracking developments in the green economy for over two years. We continue to see signs of momentum in a variety of arenas.

  • Previous economic bubbles have been focused in one industry or in a couple of closely related industries. The greening of the economy is touching nearly every industry.
  • All sectors of the economy are involved including public and private companies, non profits, government organizations, and joint public-private ventures.
  • Innovation is occurring in all aspects of our world from new energy sources, new manufacturing materials and processes, new products, new transportation options, new ways to process waste, and new building materials and methods.
  • Science demonstrates a serious need to change our way of doing business and living. We cannot continue to pull resources from the Earth without regard for the future.
  • Laws, policies, incentives, and disincentives are being put in place to encourage and support new industries.
  • Multiple streams of funding are going toward green industries including money from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 (stimulus package), venture capital companies, major corporations, and grant organizations.
  • (There are no doubt other signs of momentum…if you see one we’ve missed, reply to this email and let us know!)

As a result of our research, we’ve also gathered a sense of the rhythm of growth within the green economy.

  • We are in the early stages of the green economy.
  • The key cornerstones of the green economy are just being put in place. The Fuel Efficiency Standards are now in place. Renewable Portfolio Standards are in place in some states but not all. The cap and trade system has yet to be defined. The law that may give shape to this system will be debated in the Senate in the Fall 2009.
  • There’s no guarantee that the growth will be a constant, steady ride.
  • It’s likely specific industries, companies, and technologies will go through ups and downs as the economy matures, markets settle out, and technologies are replaced by newer innovation.
  • Only 1/3 of the stimulus package funds have been distributed thus far. 88% of 2009 disbursements are targeted to go toward health care initiatives, education, and income security and only 12% is going toward transportation, community development, and energy/environment. In 2012, the percentages will shift such that 63% of the funds will go toward transportation, community development, and energy/environment projects. In other words, funds for the greening of our economy will continue to be distributed for another five years from this law alone.
  • Green initiatives such as renewable energy, alternative transportation, smart grid, energy efficiency strategies, and waste management are going to take time to implement. Each industry will develop at a different rate, but it’s entirely possible that we’ll continue to see green innovations and developments over the next decade or two.

Actions You Can Take:

Although it’s true that we can’t accurately predict exactly what the green economy will look like one year, three years, five years, or ten years into the future, we do feel confident the green economy will continue to evolve. Each green industry will evolve and mature on its own timeframe. Different job functions will be needed at each stage of development.

Your best plan at this point is to prepare! Use this window of time to identify your green niche, explore your green career options, build your green network, and strengthen your resume. The tasks associated with each of these actions are outlined and described on Green Career Central.

Taking these actions now and over the next months, or even years depending on your industry goals, will allow you to be in position to make the leap when your target industry is ready for you.

Update

We had a wonderful vacation in the Canadian Rockies during early July. It was refreshing and rejuvenating to spend 10 days hiking among rugged mountains, glaciers, aqua rivers of glacial waters, blossoming wildflowers, and amazing forests.

Our first stop was Mt Assiniboine, a remote lodge in the British Columbia Parks system. We were with 25 other visitors in this rustic lodge for five nights. During our hikes in the high country we experienced rain, thunderstorms, hail, and even some snow! Oh, and a wee bit of sun on our first day and our last day at the lodge.

After our stay in the high country, we drove to Jasper for more hiking. My favorite hike was to Mt Edith Cavell and the Angel Glacier. It was an amazing experience to walk on land that had been under a glacier within the last fifty years, to see icebergs spawned by the current glacier, and to hear/watch snow fall from snow above the glacier. On the shore of the glacial lake we stood next to large chunks of ice that had fallen from the glacier above our heads! Can’t imagine being there the day those chunks fell!

During our trip we kept track of the animals we saw (a habit from family vacations way back when!)…blue heron, deer, bald eagle (3x), marmot, arctic hare, osprey catching a fish and losing it to a bald eagle, black bear (3x), elk, mountain goats and kids, fox, and more!! Thrilling to see them all.
