August Call: "Where Do Your Skills Fit in the Green Economy?"

Wednesday, August 26, 2009
6 pm Pacific / 9 pm Eastern

  • By special request, Green Career Central Founder Carol McClelland, is hosting a teleclass tomorrow that will really dig into the details of one aspect of your green career journey. This is not an introductory call but rather an in-depth call for those ready for more! Because there will be fewer people on this call, we will be opening the phone lines so Carol may answer your questions live and you may all share ideas.
  • As you try to figure out your target green career, are you concerned you don't know all of your options?
  • Are you wondering where you might use your skills in the green economy?
  • Do you have a map of the entire green economy to make sure you are headed down the right career path?

In this content-rich teleclass, Carol shares her latest map of the green economy. With this map in hand you'll be able to pinpoint the areas of the green economy that are most attractive to you. You'll also have more assurance that you aren't missing out on opportunities you don't know about.

Join us for this call to:

  • Discover how to organize green industries into six industry categories.
  • See examples of industries that fall into each industry category.
  • Find out how each industry category has a slightly different culture that may influence your career choices.
  • Uncover functions that can be done in nearly any industry category.
  • Receive a chart that illustrates all that we discuss.

A few comments from past teleclass participants:

-- Carol is very knowledgeable on the various aspects of the green industry.

-- Carol's perspective regarding the state of the Green Economy was helpful. The teleclass helped me to not be so overwhelmed and alone in the process of looking to transition my career. It was good to hear other people in a similar position as well. Very motivating!

-- The concepts Carol shared were well laid out and the timing was perfect for the call.

Tip of the Week: Staying on Top of the Evolving Green Economy

To discover your green career, and to thrive in the green career you choose, you must make it a habit to keep your finger on the pulse of the green economy.

A number of environmental, technical, economic, political, and global factors come together to define the green economy. You cannot have a solid understanding of the state of your target green industry or profession without knowing how the overall green economy is unfolding.

Choosing Your Outlets for News

To stay on top of the news about the green economy your best option is to turn to online media sources. After reviewing a selection of sources for a week or so, set up bookmarks for the news organizations and blogs you want to follow on a regular basis.

Choose sources that address the views of a variety of audiences. Some sources are preaching to the choir and know it. These outlets can provide a good overview of what environmentally-conscious experts think about the green economy.

You may also want to include a couple of sources that give voice to the environmental skeptics who are challenging or questioning the views of environmentally-conscious experts. Although you may not agree with anything they say, it is important that you understand the views shared in these sources. Objections raised in these media sources may show up in policy debates and can have an influence on the final policies. Better to be aware of the issues than be blindsided by differing points of view.

Understanding both sides of any issue puts you in a much stronger position whether you are assessing your green career options, interviewing for a green position, or performing your duties in your green job. Having the facts, knowing the arguments for and against, and being ready for the questions-out-of-left-field give you the confidence to participate fully in discussions and to make decisions.

News Sources

A number of news sources have sections dedicated to clean, green topics. Take a look at the following online media sources to determine which ones you want to follow.

Independent Blogs

Independent blogs can be another very informative source of updates about changes. In some cases their articles are more detailed than those of traditional news outlets.

Action You Can Take

It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all these incoming resources. Here are a few tips to help you stay focused as you explore these resources.

  • Scan the blogs and choose a few of them you want to read.
  • Don’t feel you must read every single blog or even every single article. Scan the headlines and read the articles that appeal to you.
  • If any of your choices don’t live up to your expectations after a while feel free to unsubscribe and find another blog to track.
  • Search for a blog that covers the activities in your chosen industry to add to your list of resources.
