Tip of the Week: Stay on Top of Legislative Actions: Your Green Career May Depend on It

On occasion you may find your career hanging in the balance as new laws, regulations, incentives, and disincentives are introduced or reach their expiration date.

As you become more aware of the issues facing your industry or profession, you’ll gain a better sense of how your field is impacted by the politics of your region and your country. Gaining this level of knowledge is important while you are a seeking a career in a field and when you are working within the field.

Pick and choose relevant newsletters from this list to subscribe to. You might choose one newsletter to give you a good overview of how a particular set of activists are seeing the green economy. Then you might choose a newsletter that gives you a content-rich view of your industry.

TIP: I set up a gmail account that I use to sign up for all of my green newsletters. I visit that email account once or twice a day to scan what’s come in during the day. I don’t necessarily read any newsletter start to finish, but I do spend time reading articles that catch my attention. By having an email address dedicated to newsletters I don’t have to sort through them in my main email account.

Industry Newsletters

Stay alert. If you haven’t yet subscribed to a newsletter for your profession or industry, it is time to do so. Industry newsletters serve as an alert system. When your industry or profession is galvanizing its members to call for passing or defeating a certain measure, you need to pay attention.

  1. Your first step is to understand the issues in question.
  2. If an issue is not clear to you, don’t back away from it. Reach out to mentors, colleagues or your association to make sense of what is at stake.
  3. If you find the measure is likely to help or hinder your career, take action in what ever way is called for.
  4. Speak to colleagues who may not be as well informed. Write letters to your editor. Call or email your elected officials who have a vote on the measure.

Activist Organizations

You may also want to subscribe to newsletters and blogs written by activist organizations. They can be your eyes and ears tracking developments and crucial issues around the globe and throughout the green economy. Explore the following activist organizations to discover which ones you want to follow.

  • Green For All: The mission of this organization is to build a green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty.
  • We Campaign and Repower America: Founded by Al Gore, these groups of over two million citizens have come together to solve climate change, repower America with renewable electricity within ten years, and bring jobs back to the US with their Made in America tour… going on now.
  • Apollo Alliance: Labor, business, environmental, and community leaders have built a coalition to work toward a clean energy revolution that will put millions of Americans to work in a new generation of good, well-paying, green-collar jobs.
  • Natural Resources Defense Council: This environmental action group leverages their 1.2 million members to protect wildlife and wild places and to ensure a healthy environment for all life on earth.

Your Elected Officials

Newsletters and updates from your elected officials is another way to receive up-to-the minute news about governmental policy. Pay attention to what bills are being submitted, which bills are being debated, when votes are to occur on key legislation, and when the bills become law. Most elected officials provide a way to sign up for emailed updates on specific topics on their Web sites.

  • Start at the top; you can now sign up to receive updates from the White House.
  • Then head over to the United States Senate. Look for the tab labeled Senators, which will take you to a list of all senators. Click on the names of your senators, and sign up for their newsletter.
  • Visit your state’s Web site to find your elected officials for your state.

Capitol Hill Committees

You may also find it helpful to track the activities in some or all of the following committees on Capitol Hill. A number of these committees have newsletter updates.

Actions You Can Take

Rather than trying to grasp everything about every topic you are interested in, take a drip by drip approach. Reading a little bit each day will help you build a base of information to help you understand the next level of information. It really doesn’t matter where you start. The most important thing you can do is start!

Slowly but surely you’ll begin to make connections and understand the issues in more depth. Then, there will be a time when you see a trend that no one is really talking about yet. The ability to see these trends means that you are able to spot opportunities in your industry. This is a great skill to have as you deepen your career search.

Start now!
