Tip of the Week: Recovery.gov 2.0: New Local Details about Stimulus Money Distributions

Have you ever wondered where the stimulus money has gone in your local area?
Have you been frustrated by how difficult it has been to find this information?
Do you wonder how much more money is going to flow into your community?

If so, then you are going to be excited about Recovery.gov 2.0.

Earlier this month the government unveiled their brand new site that displays how money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 has been distributed throughout the United States and the U.S. Territories.

On the home page of www.Recovery.gov you’ll find a map that enables you to drill down and down and down until you reach street level. Although the map is well designed and easy to navigate, I spent a couple hours exploring the site in depth so you’d be able to use these steps to get up to speed quickly.

Why This Data Matters to You

These new maps give you a way to compare how much money has been announced by agencies and how much as been received by local recipients.

  • Understanding which projects have been funded in which organizations may help you find local job opportunities.
  • If you are trying to find work in a particular field, you can discover which businesses have received funding from which governmental agency.
  • You can drill down within these maps to identify the exact address of fund recipients.

The rest of this newsletter gives you a detailed overview of the maps.

Choose Your Map

  • Clicking on Recipient Reported will pull up a BLUE map. This view of the map shows which companies, schools, and organizations have received funds from the stimulus package.

Tip: Check out the bar chart to the left of the map to see the U.S. Totals for Funds Awarded and Funds Received for contracts only. Grant and loan data will be added on Friday, October 30th. Click on the bars to find out the exact amount of money and the percentage of money distributed.

  • Clicking on Agency Reported will pull up a GOLD map. This view of the map shows which agencies are distributing money and where that money is expected to land.

Tip: Check out the bar chart to the left of the map to see the U.S. Totals for Funds Announced, Funds Available, and Funds Paid Out for contracts, grants, loans, and entitlements. Click on the bars to find out the exact amount of money and the percentage of money distributed.

Actions You Can Take on the Homepage Map

After identifying the map you want to explore (Recipient or Agency), you have several options.

  • The color of the state shows you the relative distribution of funds across the states. Hover your mouse over the states to pull up actual data for each state.
    • Blue map - Funds Awarded, Funds Received, and Jobs Created
    • Gold map - Funds Announced, Funds Available, and Funds Paid Out
  • If you are interested in finding these same numbers for the U.S. Territories, click on the Territories tab in the lower right corner of the map.

Drilling Down to the Details

  • You have two ways to drill down for more information.
    • Enter your zip code in the lower right corner of the map to drill down to your immediate geographic area. (See the next section for more information about this detailed level of information.)
    • Click on the state you want to explore.
  • Either of these actions will take you to a larger, close up version of the map. Check out the Map View tabs to decide how you want to view the data on the maps.
    • Unemployment data by state or county
    • Funding by state, county, zip code, Congressional district
    • Map style to show streets or the aerial view of the country

Exploring Your Local Area

When you click on any region (state, county, zip, district) you can see the number of awards and the financial value of those rewards in the table in the lower left corner of the map.

Tip: If you are having a hard time clicking on your zip code, county, or district, use the zoom bar on the left side of the map to enlarge the area you want to explore. Or return to the home page and click on your desired state. Give the map a moment to adjust the scale of the map. Then select the map view you desire.

When you arrive at the map, you’ll see colored dots scattered around the map that represent the three award types. These awards are categorized into contracts (green), grants (blue), and loans (purple) that Agencies are reporting (gold map) or that Recipients are reporting (blue map). Remember, the grants and loans for recipients won’t show on the map until after Oct 30th. When possible these dots are plotted at the exact location of the recipient organization. If the address is not known, the dots are placed in the center of the state or region.

Tip: Click between the Agency Reported vs Recipient Reported to see the difference between the number of dots the agencies have announced and the number of recipients that have reported the money. This will give you a sense of how much money is yet to land in your region.

The dots are the gold mine of this map! Keep drilling down for very detailed information about where money is landing in your area.

  • Clicking on each dot gives you the name of the company and the amount of the reward.
  • Click on “View awards for this Recipient” to see a description of the award, the city, and the award amount. If the recipient received multiple awards, you’ll be able to see details for all of the awards.
  • Click on “More Details” to open up a new window with information about the award and the company, including the company’s address. The data you see depends on whether the award is a contract, grant, or loan.

If you are interested in the awards given out by a particular agency, click on the Recipients tab on the right side of the map. You can indicate which kind of awards you want to see and which agency you are researching. This creates a filter that shows you just the dots you want to see.
