Tip of the Week: The State of Green Business and Your Green Career – Part 1

My favorite annual report, State of Green Business 2010, was just released by GreenBiz.com and Greener World Media.

This 60+ page report provides a rich, detailed look at how green green businesses are these days. The report itself has two parts – a summary of the green business trends over the last year and a status report of green business based on 20 different markers.

I’ve been combing through the report, searching for green career trends. I’ll be sharing trends in today’s newsletter based on the business trends outlined in the report. At a future date, I’ll review the descriptions of the 20 different markers to identify additional green career trends.

Bottom Line

Before diving into the ten green business trends, I wanted to share a couple of key quotes from the report that give an overall sense of the current state of the green economy.

In noting that green professionals were not laid off even amid corporate cutbacks caused by the recession, Joel Makower notes, “green thinking is becoming embedded in each of these other disciplines”. The other disciplines include accounting, finance, human resources, marketing, and other functions within any successful business. In other words, business leaders are seeing that professionals with green, sustainable training are a critical part of being competitive during these economic times.

On page 20, at the end of the discussion of the ten trends, the final point is: “Recession notwithstanding, next-gen green products, and the infrastructure needed to support them, continue to emerge relatively unabated, expanding opportunities for companies seeking to be part of the growing green economy.

Both of these high level conclusions about the State of Green Business, are positive news for those looking for their place within the green economy.

Green Business Trends

The ten trends included in the State of Green Business 2010 report are based on 2,400 articles and blog posts that were published on the Greener World Media websites – www.GreenBiz.com, ClimateBiz.com, GreenerBuilding.com, GreenerComputing.com, and GreenerDesign.com. (Just a side note: We recommend any and all of these blogs to you as you explore your green career options.)

“Radical Transparency” – More and more attention is being paid to knowing what goes into products, and what business practices green companies are using.

Information management – if you have experience managing large amounts of rapidly changing, real time information, you may find a place in managing the information coming out of this trend toward transparency.

Sharing information in real time – If companies are providing information about their business practices and their products, people want to access that information when they need it. Think websites, mobile devices, social networking, and in store coding.

Walmart! – Okay, you may not think of Walmart at the forefront of transparency regarding sustainability, but it’s time to put the company on your radar. In 2009 they launched a project to create a Sustainability Index for their products. They are collecting questionnaire results from suppliers and building full life-cycle descriptions of many of their products. Although the protocols for this work are being developed as they dig into the process, this is bound to be a long term project with a lot of moving parts!

Green seals – A number of companies are refocusing their business to provide a seal for sustainable, green products. You’ve no doubt heard of some of these companies – Green Seal, Good Housekeeping, Underwriters Laboratories – and that’s just the beginning. You can also look at industry specific organizations that are offering seals of their own.

Marketing Green Products – Determining the most effective way to market green products is a bit tricky. Consumers are motivated by various benefits. Conducting market research on green buying habits, and then building marketing campaigns that hit the mark, are critical parts of the green economy.

Sharing Innovations – In a move toward open collaboration, several organizations are helping companies share their intellectual property and patents with other companies. This is an amazing shift in how company knowledge is generally handled. If you are interested in being a part of this movement, check out the links in the report to Eco-Patent Commons, GreenXchange, and Innovation Exchange to see how these organizations are run and how they may expand over time.

Wheeled Vehicles – For many companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint, the focus is on rethinking the vehicles they rely on to do business.

Fleets – Although the car industry has been hurt by the recession, one area of the industry that’s had a reasonably good year is fleet sales for all variety of green vehicles, in the form of taxis, trucks, and cars that run on alternative fuel.

Packages – Moving boxes around the country and the world has quite an impact on a company’s carbon footprint. All the big name shipping companies are replacing their trucks with alternative fuel vehicles.

Maintenance and operations – It turns out it’s not all about the vehicle! How much the vehicle reduces the carbon footprint depends on how it is maintained and operated. Even the fuel choice has an impact.

Energy Efficiency – At first glance, energy efficiency seems to refer to upgrading certain systems within a building, or systems to reduce how much energy is used. You might think first of lighting, windows, heating and air conditioning, equipment or appliances. Although you’d be right, you’d also be missing a few major opportunities.

Retrofitting – Making the changes listed above in residential, commercial, and governmental buildings is one area of this trend.

Energy management – A number of technology companies are entering the field to build software to allow organizations to manage their energy use in real time. Some companies to watch in this space include Verdiem and Engenuity. Other tech giants, such as Microsoft and Google, are developing software for the home user.

Data centers – Data centers use a tremendous amount of energy. Companies are looking for ways to make these centers more energy efficient.

I’ll continue with the remaining five green business trends and how they impact green careers in next week’s newsletter.

In the mean time, if you are interested in finding your place in the green economy, I highly recommend that you read this report, cover to cover. Although some sections may not be completely relevant to you, understanding all of the themes, even at a general level, will help you understand the green economy in more depth.
