Tip of the Week: Going for Your Green Career Gold: Learning from Olympic Athletes

As we watch the Olympic Games, I’m struck once again by the commitment, focus, and dedication of all of the athletes. Listening to the commentators tell their stories, certain characteristics have caught my attention because these are the same qualities green career seekers must have to succeed.
A Clear Focus
Athletes who make it to the top echelon have a focus and a vision that pulls, pushes, and draws them forward. Their goal keeps them focused through a series of milestones on their way to the Olympics. Although only a few athletes rise to medal level, many, many more athletes live their life with the dream of gold as their compass.
As a green career seeker, you also need to have a focus and vision to guide you forward. Although the dream for a green career seeker isn’t as clearly defined as a gold medal, it’s still worth the time and effort to identify your ideal career goal. Although you might not reach that specific goal, you will achieve far more than if you focused on a career goal that didn’t inspire and motivate you as much as your ideal career does.
Keep in mind that you don’t take one huge leap and land your ideal green career right away. Instead, like an athlete, your ultimate goal is achieved by meeting a series of milestones. Again, your milestones are not laid out as clearly as winning the nationals or winning the qualifying races to win your spot on the Olympic team. Instead, your milestones are the steps it takes to go from a career vision to a job in your targeted field.
Your Mindset
If you watch any of the Olympics, it’s bound to be clear to you that it takes a certain mindset to be an Olympic athlete. What you may not realize is how much a similar mindset will help you with your quest for a green career.
I was intrigued by something, Apolo Ohno, the short track speed skater said about his return to the sport after several years off the ice. When interviewed about his journey he said he ended each day with a question: “Did I do everything possible to excel today?”
When I was changing careers years ago, I used to start each day with the question: “What one thing can I do today to reach my goal?”
Regardless of how you phrase the question, it all comes down to:
- Focus and concentration on the steps you need to take to reach your goal.
- Energy and effort to do what it takes to achieve results.
- Determination and perseverance to carry on when everything feels hard.
The Agony and the Ecstasy
On the path to your ideal green career, it’s possible that you’ll hit some rocky patches along the way. Although it’s unlikely you’ll endure physical injuries that play havoc with your progress, you may run across other obstacles.
There’s no way to predict exactly what might knock you about on your journey. You might find that policies or regulations change, funding shifts, your dream company fizzles, or you might not get the job you have been striving to get.
The question is, how do you react to these obstacles? As athletes discover time and again, just because you don’t succeed at one time doesn’t mean you’ll never succeed. In fact, there are plenty of stories of athletes that walk away from their sport, only to return to win a medal or achieve a personal best time or score.
Even if you can’t pursue your dream directly due to financial constraints or personal challenges, don’t let the spark of your dream fade completely. Find small ways to keep the spark alive through volunteer work, reading, dreaming, or working on side projects. You have no way to know how circumstances might unfold in the future that will allow you to bring your dream back to life.
Who Do You Have on Your Support Team?
Every Olympic athlete – medalists, competitors, or those who didn’t make the team this time around – has a team of supporters helping them reach for their goal.
In addition to a training coach, many athletes work with a medical team to keep them at the top of their game physically. Some work with a sports coach or psychologist to help them manage the emotions and psychological intensity of their journey. Their team members are also part of their team, helping them push themselves to new heights, faster times, and longer distances. And last, but not least, is the athletes cheering section that is there at every turn to help them celebrate their wins, brush off their losses, and keep their vision in focus.
Who do you have routing for you from the sidelines? Who do you rely on for guidance, resources, and ideas? Who helps you manage the emotional side of your career transition? Although it’s sometimes easy to slip into thinking that you should be able to manage your career change all on your own, it’s likely you’ll make more progress more efficiently with your support team helping you at each step of the way.
