Tip of the Week: Green Business Trends Open Up Green Career Possibilities

A couple of weeks ago I started a newsletter series on the green career trends I identified while reading my favorite annual report, State of Green Business 2010 that was just released by GreenBiz.com and Greener World Media.

This 60+ page report provides a rich, detailed look at how green green businesses are these days. In the last part of this series, I highlighted career trends related to the five business trends included in the report. These were: Radical Transparency, Green Marketing, Sharing Innovations, Wheeled Vehicles, and Energy Efficiency. Read that edition of the Green Career Tip of the Week to discover more details.

Here are green career opportunities that spring from the following green business trends.

IT Created Energy Efficient Solutions – Information technology companies are turning their expertise to find solutions to reduce energy usage. A few well known players are focusing on virtual meeting solutions to reduce the need to travel. Many other companies are coming up with systems to help energy consumers – from individuals to corporations – measure their energy consumption in real time, and manage their usage effectively. If you have a background in IT, pay attention to developing trends in this sector.

Toxicity Problems – News stories over the last few years have brought to our attention that some products contain toxic materials that are dangerous to our health and welfare.

New Pressure - New laws, regulations, and activist pressure are leading to a shift in how manufacturers are handling the toxic ingredients in their products. Whether you work on the advocacy or activist side, drawing up new policies and regulations, or you work for the manufacturer who must rework their products to meet new requirements, there are a number of career opportunities. Read the report to discover the companies who are leading the way and removing problematic toxins before the rules go into effect.

Green Chemistry – In this developing science, the push is not to remove toxins but to develop new materials and processes that do not rely on toxins in the first place.

New Directions in Food – Several factors (dwindling supplies, vocal activists, concerned consumers, and energy efficiency measures) are motivating large food companies to rethink how they source the food they deliver. If you are interested in working in the food industry, pay attention to these trends as you find your green niche.

Local, Local, Local – In real estate it’s location, location, location. In the food world, it’s becoming more and more important for restaurants, large chains, and food service companies to consider where the food came from.

Urban Gardens – Vegetable gardens are popping up in urban settings on rooftops, in vertical gardens, on barges in the river, and in previously vacant lots. Entrepreneurs taking on this innovation are providing fresh, local produce to food providers in the area.

Fishy Business – Overfishing is leading to shortages that are forcing major companies to rethink how they harvest fish. Aquaculture, or fish farming, the way it is currently done isn’t all that sustainable either. The pressure is on to find, catch, and sell only sustainably caught fish.

Packaging Takes on a New Look and Feel – Green packaging is no longer limited to corrugated cardboard from recycled consumer waste. If you are a product designer, manufacturer, or inventor, it’s time to think beyond the box in terms of:

Green Packaging Materials – It’s looking like a whole new generation of possibilities. Think bamboo, bioplastics, plant derivatives such as wood chips and wheat!

Less is More – Reducing the bulk of packaging is another mission in this industry. Reduce the size, reduce the costs. A win for both sides of the sale.

New Products Made from Waste – Terrracycle, in New Jersey, has created a business by turning branded waste (containers and materials) into saleable products. Very inventive and inspiring!

Check out the State of Green Business 2010 report for links to fourteen articles about products with innovative green designs. A great list of companies making contributions in this area.

Smart Grid – Whether you are technically minded or not, it’s important to be aware of this green business / innovation trend. What’s at stake? Just the tasks of revolutionizing the generation, transmission, distribution, and storage of power and reworking how we power our lives. Transformations are likely in our homes, from electronic gadgets and vehicles, to home appliances and heating/cooling systems. One Cisco executive has stated that the opportunities within this sector are “1000 times as large” as those created by the Internet. He’s not alone. Although the exact path isn’t mapped out, the size of the opportunity is getting the attention of major players and start ups. This revolution will touch everyone’s life and work in one way or another, just as the Internet has. Stay tuned for future developments!
