Tip of the Week: Expand How You Think About Your Green Job Possibilities

Are you in the process of switching jobs? Either finding a green job because you are currently unemployed or plotting a career change to a new green job?
Do you have picture of the kind of green job you want? Are you envisioning yourself in a full time job in a large company that provides full benefits?
Have you considered how this picture may actually be limiting your options?
Kinds of Employers
People often focus on large companies with household names when they are searching for jobs. This focus may be limiting your options more than necessary. As you brainstorm your options for your green career, think broadly about which potential employers you want to target.
- Start ups
- Small companies
- Family run companies
- Private companies
- Large cap companies
- Global companies
- Federal government
- State governments
- Regional organizations
- Local governments
- Non profits
- Foundations
- Educational institutions
- Think tanks
- Research organizations
- NGO – Non-governmental organizations
Roles You Can Take
In additional to exploring different organizations where you might work, consider expanding how you think about your own role. If you are focusing solely on becoming a full-time employee in your next job, you may be missing out on other opportunities that could be a crucial stepping stone to your green career.
- An external consultant
- A contract employee
- A part-time worker
- A freelancer
- A temporary worker
- A seasonal employee
- An intern
- A volunteer
- An advisor or board member
- An entrepreneur
Although it’s true that some of these options pay better than others, ALL of these opportunities are well worth pursuing if you are currently looking for work or if you are building your resume for your next green job. You never know how participating in one project, gig, event or contract will pave the way to your next opportunity.
Be Active
No matter what situation you are in, find opportunities to be active in ways that allow you to share your strengths and passions. Be as strategic as you can be about the choices you make. Assess how each opportunity meets your needs.
- Are you able to interact with the people you want to know and be known by?
- Can you learn a skill that will enhance your resume?
- Can you fill in a chronological gap in your resume?
- Can you gain experience that will make you more attractive to potential employers?
If an opportunity enables you to meet one or more of your goals, say YES!
Although there’s no way to predict what your path will look like, it’s quite likely that the more involved you are, the more people you will meet, and the more quickly your next paid opportunity will come into focus.
