Tip of the Week: Expand How You Think About Your Green Job Possibilities

When I look out at the green economy, I see green career opportunities at every turn.
When I talk with job seekers and career counselors I’m often asked “Where are the green jobs? We were told there would be green jobs in abundance. Where are they?”
It’s as though I’m spotting jobs that are camouflaged in some way. Others who look at the same information are missing them.
This week, after traveling and speaking to six different groups since early March, I started thinking about why my view of the green economy is so different from those I speak to. Here’s what I’ve discovered so far.
1) I suspect I have a broader definition of what qualifies as a green job.
a. If you are looking for jobs that are 80-100% green, you don’t realize the impact you could have in working in a job that’s only partially green at the moment.
b. If you are expecting to find a job with a “green” job title, you are going to miss a slew of opportunities.
c. If you think green jobs are only within renewable energy, smart grid, or green building, you are going to miss a wide range of viable green careers.
d. If you believe that green jobs are only those that have a direct impact on the environment, you are leaving out a collection of jobs that are critical to forming and shaping the green economy.
2) I include people who are already in green careers where as others may be focused on finding green jobs that are currently open. Reading the blogs and news reports of green innovation and advancement in a variety of industries and sectors, tells me that there are already a lot of people who have green careers. Although they may not think of themselves as having green careers, they are having a positive impact on the environment as a result of their efforts. People in these jobs will get promoted, leave the company, or take lateral transfers. As they move on, these jobs will open up for others.
3) I don’t just focus only on jobs that are listed on green job boards. I look beyond stated job openings to consider opportunities that are created because there is a need for a solution. I’ve seen:
a. Employees green the job they already have by applying what they’ve learned about sustainability in their current work situation.
b. Employees leverage the experience and results they gain on a volunteer green company project to demonstrate results that show management the viability of creating a green position within the same company. (Some refer to this as intraprenership.)
c. Non-employees present solutions to decision makers to land a consulting gig or a project.
d. Non-employees take a viable idea as the basis for an entrepreneurial green business.
4) I include a full range of green jobs including consulting, project work, part time jobs, volunteer opportunities, internships, and full time, fully benefited jobs in my picture of the green economy. In the early stages of this shift to a new economic era, job seekers will benefit by taking opportunities that help them build their green experience. These opportunities don’t have to be full-time jobs to be real opportunities. A short term stint can make the difference in opening up full time job opportunities down the line.
5) I look at the green economy as a long term opportunity, rather than just focusing on current openings. The shift to the new economy is happening right now… and will continue to happen into the future. Although not all green careers are available in abundance in all green industries and sectors at this moment, opportunities do exist now and they are likely to grow as the green economy continues to unfold.
If you want to play a part in the green economy, get clear about the industry/sector that’s the best fit for your skills, interests, experience, and education. You can do this before you are ready to transition into the green economy. In fact, the sooner you identify your vision for your green career, the more time you’ll have to dig in to explore your options and prepare yourself to excel in your future green career.
