Tip of the Week: Three Ways Your Vague Green Career Goal Limits the Success of Your Job Search

When I talk with people who want to transition into a green career they often tell me their goal.

  • I want to work in solar or clean tech.
  • I want to be in green sales.
  • I want a job in sustainability.

When I ask them to be more specific, they are often at a loss for words. Either they don’t know enough about the industry to know where their skills fit, or they aren’t sure what skills they have to contribute.

Although they feel they are being specific, their goal isn’t concise enough or detailed enough to be very useful in the quest for their green career. Where do you stand?

Do you have enough specificity to direct your job search activities? Is your goal so broad that you vacillate between being completely overwhelmed with all there is to research, and pinging from one topic to the next trying to get something, anything to stick?

If you are in this situation, it’s likely you are frustrated with your lack of progress, worried that you’ll never figure it out, and confused about what actions to take next.

If you are not specific about your green career goal, it’s likely your contacts are confused as well. When your contacts don’t know what you want to do they have a difficult time offering referrals that fit your needs. They don’t know which resources, events, training opportunities, or contacts align with your goals. This isn’t just about referrals to resources! Your contacts aren’t going to be able to pass you viable job leads either.

As a result, you won’t get the results you need from your networking activities. There’s no way to build momentum. Leads will dribble in bit by bit in a way that isn’t very cohesive or focused.

The hiring managers that are trying to interview you are also confused! They may not understand why you are interviewing for the position. They may not be able to connect the dots between your past experience and the position you are applying for. Need I tell you, this probably won’t bode for the outcome of your interview.

If you don’t understand how to present yourself in a cohesive, organized, convincing way, you can’t expect to get hired into a job that’s a good fit for you. Your only hope is to run into a hiring manager who is able to spot a diamond in the rough. Even then, the manager may decide you are a great fit for a job that’s really not that interesting for you.

If you are determined to have a green job, you must create a destination or goal to guide you on your journey. Don’t expect to rely on the hiring manager, your recruiter, your mother, your spouse, or your best friend to figure this out for you. The only one qualified to determine your vision is YOU! You’ll need to discern, possibly with the help of a coach or coaching program, where your skills are best suited within the green economy. Your clarity isn’t likely to happen in a flash. It’s probably better to think of the process as a journey or a big project with multiple steps.
