Tip of the Week: Earth Day 2010: Progress and Opportunities

Tomorrow is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. A grassroots effort to bring about a cleaner environment led to the passing of The Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act. In one sense most of us enjoy a better environment than we did 40 years ago, with cleaner water and cleaner air. Unfortunately there are other aspects of the environment that are not in better shape.
In response to the current trends, the official Earth Day organization has expanded their scope to incorporate additional core issues including the traditional issues (water, air, and biodiversity) and adding the issues we face now: climate change, energy, food, recycling & waste, sustainable development, green schools, the green economy, education, and more!
The issues we face cannot be solved by just one group – not the government, not businesses, not citizens, not global organizations, not educational institutions, not investors. We must find ways to create integrated solutions that take an all new look at our world: how we live, how we eat, how we travel, how we work, and so on. Every element of our lives must be open for re-visioning.
Sometimes it’s easy to think we really aren’t making any progress, that one group or another is holding us back. Sure it would be nice if we could get past the political, regional, national, and industry boundaries to find the best solutions given the circumstances. But the reality is that things are not that straightforward!
Progress!
The good news is there is progress being made, in nearly ever segment of the economy. On this Earth Day, take some time to appreciate the innovations, programs, and policies that are taking form.
Although this summary may seem fairly high level, you may discover some new clues to your passions and your future direction. Remember you can’t begin to see your place in the green economy unless you understand the scope of what’s happening now.
Federal Government – If you’ve been exploring your green career options, you are no doubt already aware of the American Reinvestment and Renewal Act of 2009 that led to large investments in a number of key industries. But that’s not all that’s happened at the Federal level. A number of efforts are in progress regarding the clean energy economy, climate change, and the natural environment. I encourage you to read a summary of the relevant initiatives on the White House site.
Local Government – Over 1000 mayors have committed to lowering the greenhouse gas emissions in their cities and towns that match or exceed the Kyoto Protocol. Check out the locations of this map to see if your town/city is included! The commitment these mayors have to making change in their local communities is best described in the best practices reports and surveys included on the US Mayors site. When you see what others are doing, it’s possible to gain new insights about what might be possible in your region. Don’t recreate the wheel! Learn from the trail blazers.
Higher Education – The Association of the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) has just signed up their 1000th educational institution and now has one member in each of the 50th states! If you are looking for information about cutting edge trends in sustainability, you must be aware of this organization. Each newsletter is full of best practices and new progress in various areas of sustainability. The website is a great resource as well.
Climate/Green Economy Think Tanks and Activist Organizations – Another group having an impact on the shape of the green economy are the think tanks and activist organizations such as www.climateprotect.org, www.apolloalliance.org, and www.greenforall.org. If you want to track what’s happening or not happening at the governmental level, check out the reports and campaigns of these activist organizations.
Industries – Industry, trade, and professional associations are making a number of advancements toward greener, cleaner, and more sustainable business practices. It’s not possible to list all the initiatives here. If you want to get a sense of the scope of the 50 industries and sectors that make up the green economy, check out our Green Economy Map and Green Careers for Dummies for profiles of these industries and their initiatives. (If you are a Green Career Central member, be sure to explore the in depth industry profiles for links to many aspects of these industries.
Opportunity!
For every initiative, program, policy, and innovation, there are problems, issues, systems, and policies that need a new solution! If you are passionate about contributing to the solutions there are numerous opportunities.
Leverage the passions, skills, knowledge, and experience you have. Dedicate yourself to learning what you need to know to make a difference in the industry or issue that interests you. Although your efforts may not be in the form of employment or a business at first, don’t despair! The skills, experience, and contacts you gain through these experiences will help you move your green career search forward.
As the green/clean/sustainable economy takes root, more and more green career and green business opportunities will become evident.
