Green Careers for Dummies

I just spotted a new review of Green Careers for Dummies on Amazon.com. Thanks, Bill!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for anyone looking to start a green career!

“Carol McClelland knows her stuff! This book is full of great tips to determine what green career is best for you. It provides suggestions and resources that allow you to get started quickly and plugged into networks of people with similar interests. I read this book in a weekend and refer to it often for the many great tips and resources it provides. This book provides fantastic insight whether you are beginning your first career, looking to make a career transition into green or clean technology, or trying to make your current job more environmentally sound.”

Tip of the Week: Gulf Oil Spill: A Turning of the Tides for Climate Energy Policy?

Gulf Oil Spill…

Unless you’ve been on a solo voyage across the Pacific or a silent retreat in a remote mountain cabin, those three words are enough to evoke a number of images in your mind.

Images that likely bring a full range of emotions from distress to disbelief, and possibly despair. Like many large scale disasters, of human or natural causes, it’s difficult to comprehend the extent of the event and the impacts that will ultimately ripple through the fabric of our lives for decades to come.

Are Photos Powerful Enough to Shift Policy?

“A watershed moment”

Bill McKibben, founder of global grassroots climate-change website 350.org

“A moment of reckoning”

Wesley Warren, director of programs at the Natural Resources Defense Council

(As quoted in: Gulf Oil Spill: A Symbol Of What Fossil Fuels Do To The Earth Every Day, Say Environmentalists)

A number of environmentalists and clean energy proponents are looking forward to explore the impact this event will have on climate/energy policy in the coming weeks as the Senate’s version of the Climate/Energy Bill is debated.

Al Gore sums up the situation in one sentence, in his recent article, The Crisis Comes Ashore.

"Just as we feel a sense of urgency in demanding that this ongoing oil spill be stopped,

we should feel an even greater sense of urgency in demanding that the much larger

and more dangerous ongoing emissions of global warming pollution must also

be stopped to make the world safe from the climate crisis that is building all around us."

Will it serve as a wake up call to the nation to push for a clean energy policy that will reduce our dependence on oil and petroleum? Thus far at least one politician, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Governor of California, was persuaded to rethink his position on offshore drilling.

Only time will tell how the images and realities of the Gulf Oil Spill will impact the debate, final bill, and Senate vote for the Climate/Energy Bill sponsored by Senators John Kerry and Joe Lieberman. Watch the news over the coming days and weeks to see how this drama unfolds. The Senate bill is due to be announced today.

To fully understand what you hear, you may want to know the following:

The House of Representatives passed their version of this bill back in June 2009. You can read the two Tip of the Week articles I wrote about the process back then:

The American Clean Energy & Security Act - The Good, Bad and Ugly

Update and Next Steps: American Energy and Climate Act

And for a more recent chapter, take a look at this primer of recent events leading up to the announcement of the Senate Bill.
