We’re Hiring: Commercial Analyst at HYRO
Are you looking to launch your career in the fast-evolving world of green energy ? HYRO, a hydrogen and e-fuel development company within Octopus Energy Generation, is searching for a bright, motivated early-career analyst to help drive the UK’s energy transition and decarbonise sectors that are tough to electrify, like aviation, shipping and heavy industry.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an early career analyst with limited work experience who wants to play an important role decarbonising the UK from within of one of the most exciting energy companies in the world. The candidate will thrive in ambiguity and an entrepreneurial environment, likes solving real-world problems and wants to be an instrumental part of evaluating the commercial viability of our green hydrogen and e-fuel projects.
This role is to provide commercial/financial support to the HYRO team to help develop green hydrogen and e-fuel projects. This will be through supporting decision-making with clear, data-driven insights, building and maintaining HYRO’s financial models and researching market fundamentals. HYRO is a small, dynamic team and so the candidate will be given a lot of responsibility and exposed to every facet of project development: from early-stage site selection and initial techno-economic assessments to offtake negotiations and bankability assessments.
The role will be based at the Octopus Energy office just off Soho in Central London. You will be expected to carry out your work from the London office and you will have the opportunity to accompany the team to visit project site locations/industry events in the UK from time to time.
You will work closely with the development and origination team, providing critical analytical support and developing robust financial models to inform decision-making. You will be employed by ORI JV Holdings 6 Limited (“ORI JV”), the development entity established by the OEGEN funds that funds HYRO.
While the role starts with a 12-month period, HYRO would expect that should the candidate perform at the level required and the business continues to grow as planned, a permanent role would be available. The candidates should be aware that HYRO believes an entrepreneurial and a go-getting attitude is of higher value to the business than simply having the required credentials. However, it is up to candidates to demonstrate, where there is a gap in their experience (i.e. the candidate studied English), how they would be able to perform at the necessary level.
Any unchecked use of artificial intelligence to support the application will see the candidate’s application immediately rejected with no opportunity for feedback or reapplication.
Your responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
· Support techno-economic analysis of HYRO projects, including assessing renewable power inputs (solar, wind, PPA structures) and downstream e-fuel and green hydrogen economics.
· Build and maintain detailed financial models for e-fuel and green hydrogen (IRR, NPV, sensitivity analysis, discounted cash flow, levelised cost of fuel, etc.) to assess the economic feasibility of potential projects.
· Work with origination and development teams to test project assumptions and align on feasibility assumptions.
· Gather, validate, and interpret data from various sources to support modelling assumptions and sensitivity analyses.
· Support the evaluation of potential partnerships, hydrogen/e-fuel offtake agreements, and other commercial opportunities.
· Assist in the preparation of investment materials, presentations and reports for internal and external stakeholders
· Conduct market research and analysis on the energy sector, with a specific focus on renewable energy technologies, hydrogen, carbon capture and regulatory and policy research across target geographies.
· Contribute to the identification and assessment of project risks and opportunities.
· Track and benchmark technology and cost trends in electrolysers, e-methanol, ammonia, sustainable aviation fuel and related sectors.
· Assist in developing internal tools and templates to systematise project evaluation.
· Stay abreast of industry trends, policy developments, and technological advancements in the e-Fuels, green hydrogen and broader energy landscape.
What you bring to us:
· Candidates with 2-3 years of post-graduate with a degree (Bachelor's or Master's degree) in a relevant field such as engineering. economics, finance, business, or a related discipline.
· Demonstrable experience in financial modelling, ideally within the energy or renewable energy sectors (this could include university projects, internships, or previous roles).
· Strong analytical and quantitative skills with a keen eye for detail.
· Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced financial modelling techniques.
· Familiarity with energy systems, hydrogen value chains and project finance concepts are highly desirable.
· A proactive and self-motivated individual with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to learn and contribute in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment.
· Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex findings to different types of audience.
· Excellent team and interpersonal skills.
· A strong desire for continuous learning and improvement.
