Internal Applicants Only - Research Associate – Hydrogen Production Cycles for Net Zero Buildings

A research Associate is required to deliver the HYDERUS+ project, aiming to assess the technoeconomic feasibility of clean Hydrogen production and heat/power supply to buildings within a regional hub. The commercial viability of the approach to Hydrogen generation for decentralised heat/power will be appraised for the unique requirements of local stakeholders.
Project Objectives:
- Compare the feasibility of alternative H2 technologies for the provision of heat/power.
- Generate simulation data that will demonstrate a credible approach to H2 deployment with CO2/O2 capture/export technology.
- Specify site to develop a commercially viable system to retrofit utility and byproduct supply to local buildings. The successful candidate will work as part of the research team at Cardiff’s Gas Turbine Research Centre (GTRC).
This position is funded through SWITCH Net Zero Wales in collaboration with Swansea University and CR Plus
The candidate would be expected work between offices in Cardiff and GTRC with occasional visits to the Neath Port Talbot region.
This post is full (35 hours per week), available from September 2025 and is fixed term for 12 months.
Salary: £40,497 - £45,413 per annum (Grade 6). We do not anticipate appointing this position above point 32, salary £40,497 per annum.

Job Description
Main Duties
Research
- To conduct research within field of hydrogen-fuelled gas turbines, and cycle simulations in the context of an industrial collaborative and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of outputs, including bidding for funding, publishing in academic journals and conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students.
- To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
- To attend and or present at conferences/seminars at a local and national level as required
- To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
- To review and synthesise existing research literature within the field
- To participate in School research activities.
- To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects
Other
- To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Qualifications And Education
- Postgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience
Knowledge, Skills And Experience
- An established expertise and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience within the following research fields:
i. Gas turbine combustion
ii. The application of alternative fuels, particularly hydrogen
iii. Gas turbine cycles
iv. Numerical simulation of thermofluids applications
- Knowledge of current status of hydrogen fuelled gas turbine cycles and emissions.
- Proven ability to publish in international journals and present work at international conferences
- Knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies
Communication and Team Working
- Proven ability in effective and persuasive communication
- Ability to supervise the work of others to focus team efforts and motivate individuals
Other
- Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and team-working within work
- Proven ability to work without close supervision
Desirable Criteria
- Evidence of collaborations with industry.
- Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community.
