Salary
Grade 6: £28,142 – £31,022 (£14.59 per hour). Competitive salary with a fair and transparent pay structure and nationally agreed annual pay awards. Career growth pathways, starting on Grade 6 and progressing to Grade 8 once fully qualified.
Role Overview
Join a dynamic Environmental Health Team at the forefront of safeguarding communities and the environment. In this graduate trainee role, you will gain hands-on experience across all areas of Environmental Health while contributing to the delivery of the Council’s Public Protection Service. You will develop skills under the supervision of qualified professionals, progressing towards managing your own caseload as you work towards full professional qualification and Registered Environmental Health Practitioner status.
Key Responsibilities and Learning Areas
Rotate across teams and activities to build a comprehensive portfolio of real-world experience, including:
- Food safety and standards
- Health and safety
- Communicable disease control
- Port health
- Domestic public health
- Pollution control

Activities may include inspecting sites, investigating complaints, providing guidance to businesses, supporting enforcement, and contributing to public health initiatives.
Career Progression
On successful completion of the programme of practical training, evidence portfolio, and professional interview to register with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) as a Registered Environmental Health Practitioner, you will automatically progress to a permanent Grade 8 Environmental Health Practitioner role within the Food Safety and Standards Team.

- BSc (Hons) or MSc in Environmental Health (for the Grade 6 role)
- Commitment to achieving Registered Environmental Health Practitioner status and completing the EHP Portfolio
- Aptitude for investigative techniques and proficiency with IT systems
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate complex information clearly
- Strong organisation, adaptability, and the ability to balance priorities effectively
- Particular interest in food safety and standards
