Job Purpose Summary:
London Luton Airport is looking for a Sustainable Aviation Manager to play a critical role in our journey towards becoming Champions in Sustainable Aviation and work towards our goal of achieving Net Zero by 2040. The Sustainable Aviation Manager will be responsible for:
- Leading on the implementation of projects related to future of flight (i.e. sustainable aviation fuel, hydrogen, electrification), carbon removals, and air quality.
- Engaging and influencing our partners and stakeholders to drive sustainability projects and commitments through close collaborations and partnerships using excellent communication and organisation skills.
- Providing strategic insight into sustainability commitments as well as on existing and new government strategy and expansion plans around decarbonisation and air quality.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
- Lead on research, engagement and delivery of sustainable aviation and innovation initiatives with our partners, including future of flight e.g. sustainable aviation fuel, hydrogen, electric.
- Influence, persuade and negotiate with colleagues and business partners to embed sustainable aviation activities into business operations and the drive actions to achieve it
- Provide technical expertise and support compliance with sustainability obligations as part of the Development Consent Order.
- Manage the air quality monitoring programme to ensure its delivery and accuracy, as well as development and implementation of a revised Air Quality Roadmap in alignment with expansion plans.
- Liaise with environmental regulatory authorities and local stakeholders regarding air quality as necessary.
- Provide advice and insight into offsetting and carbon removals, staying up to date on industry standards and best practices and aligning business strategies accordingly.
- Management of multiple projects simultaneously to reduce our carbon emissions, support our partner’s decarbonisation and improve environmental performance.
- Oversee research projects, carried out by universities, research institutions and other organisations, collate data and reports and liaise with stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
- Keep abreast with the latest developments related to sustainable aviation, carbon removals and air quality to assess operational deliverability, impact on expansion plans, and identify potential challenges and develop solutions that meet operational and business needs.
- Attend relevant industry group meetings alongside the Net Zero Senior Manager and Head of Sustainability.
- Support the Head of Sustainability to build and promote our reputation for becoming champions in sustainable aviation, including representation in industry, government and local environmental groups and committees.
- Engage with industry, government and partners to identify opportunities to reduce environmental impacts and work closely and influence key stakeholders to deliver partnerships.
- Maintain relationships with current and prospective business partners, industry, local and governmental bodies in order to keep abreast of emerging sustainability trends, policies, industry best practice, new technologies and overall agenda.
- Support the implementation of ambitious government policies in the context of decarbonisation, air quality and future of flight; and contribute to government consultation responses.
- Quality control of environmental consultants, including definition of scope, leading procurement and management of activity.
- Proactively and positively promote the LLA Way initiatives and projects with all employees and the wider airport community.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:
- Qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in environmental or sustainability studies.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working in sustainability and/or environmental management.
- Strong interest and understanding of sustainable aviation, future of flight, net zero, and wider environmental agenda.
- Strategic thinking with ability to drive change and influence stakeholders.
- Thorough understanding and up-to-date knowledge of environmental legislation and government policy.
- Excellent verbal, numeracy and literacy skills.
- Highly analytical with attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in the information produced.
- Ability to work closely and clearly communicate with other team members.
- Strong organisational and project management skills, ability to work under pressure and on multiple projects at once.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to adapt to different stakeholders.
