Purpose of the Role
The Head of Fleet, Plant & Logistics will be accountable for the strategic management, optimisation, and governance of the companys fleet, plant, and logistics operations. As the business grows from £50m to £200m turnover, this role will ensure the efficient, safe, and sustainable operation of all vehicles, plant, and equipment to support major utility contracts, with a particular focus on electricity. This role will provide leadership in fleet strategy, asset management, supply chain, and logistics planning, ensuring that resources are available, compliant, and cost-efficient to meet the demands of a scaling business and its clients.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet & Plant Strategy
- Develop and implement a long-term fleet and plant strategy aligned with the companys growth trajectory from £50m to £200m turnover.
- Ensure the companys fleet and plant assets support operational excellence, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
- Introduce innovation in fleet and plant operations, including digital telematics, alternative fuels, and carbon reduction initiatives.
Asset & Compliance Management
- Oversee the acquisition, utilisation, maintenance, and disposal of fleet and plant assets to maximise efficiency and value.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation (e.g. O Licence, LOLER, PUWER, FORS, HGV regulations).
- Lead initiatives to improve fleet safety, driver behaviour, and asset reliability.
Logistics & Operational Support
- Design and manage logistics operations to ensure timely, cost-effective movement of plant, fleet, and materials across contracts.
- Optimise transport planning, route efficiency, and resource allocation.
- Introduce digital systems for real-time logistics and fleet performance reporting.
Governance & Financial Management
- Develop and manage budgets for fleet, plant, and logistics, ensuring strong cost control and financial forecasting.
- Report regularly to the Executive and Board on asset utilisation, costs, compliance, and risk exposure.
- Embed governance structures that ensure regulatory, contractual, and corporate compliance.
Leadership & Development
- Lead and develop a team of fleet managers, logistics planners, and plant operatives.
- Build strong supplier and hire company relationships to secure best value and ensure supply chain resilience.
- Foster a culture of safety, compliance, and continuous improvement across fleet and logistics operations.
Key Skills & Experience
- Proven track record in managing large, complex fleet, plant, and logistics operations, ideally within utilities, infrastructure, or construction.
- Experience of scaling operations in a high-growth business environment (£100m+ turnover).
- Strong understanding of legislative and regulatory requirements for fleet and plant management.
- Commercial acumen with experience in cost control, budgeting, and supplier negotiations.
- Proficiency in fleet management systems, telematics, and logistics planning tools.
- Excellent leadership skills with experience developing teams and managing suppliers.
- Strong focus on safety, sustainability, and compliance within fleet and logistics operations.
