National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) has a fantastic opportunity for a Data & Modelling Engineer to join our Analysis & Modelling Team based in Wokingham to support a wide range of areas, including support & maintenance of the online and offline network analysis tools, delivery and maintenance of the data model and associated displays, high-volume data management, and resolution of real-time issues with the analysis tools.
This role will be office based in Wokingham every day. We continue to be open to flexible working arrangements as well as flexible working hours.
Key Accountabilities
The core role is the maintenance and support of the 24/7, real-time network analysis tools used by the Electricity Control Room. Working closely with the other departments across National Grid, we ensure the electricity control room has the necessary advice, guidance and facilities to enable efficient, economic and secure real-time operation.
- Deliver the on-line network analysis data model by updating our relational database and associated user displays, ensuring all changes are consistent with the requirements as detailed in our procedures.
- Carry out periodic auditing, data analysis, power-flow, and other required testing of our data model to ensure consistency throughout the network analysis data and outputs.
- Resolve real time issues with the on-line analysis tools, using fault-finding techniques and working with stakeholders to ensure that the state estimator and analysis tools produce robust and reliable results.
- The Analysis and Modelling team offers round the clock 24/7 support to our key users.
- In order to provide this, when team members achieve appropriate technical authorisations, they are required to form part of a standby rota which offers out of hours support.
- Being placed on the standby rota, and any associated out of hours work, will come with related allowance payments.
About You
- A good understanding of power system operation and power system analysis techniques (theoretical or practical) is desirable, along with knowledge or experience of SQL and relational databases.
- The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate strong STEM background, along with a diverse range of technical skills.
- STEM degree (electrical engineering preferred but not essential). Other qualifications together with relevant experience are also acceptable.
- Previous relevant experience is advantageous, but not necessary as training will be provided.
- You will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to integrate within the team and to work effectively with colleagues, stakeholders and customers.
- An analytical thinker with an aptitude for acquiring new skills, you will have a consistent and methodical approach to technical tasks, demonstrating good attention to detail and high accuracy.

This role offers a competitive salary of between £39,000 - £56,000 per annum.
