The team of over 100 Engineers and Consultants deliver projects on behalf of Clients from four offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Livingston, and Biggar. GCR sits at the centre of an international group working closely alongside our sister consultancy businesses:Green Cat Renewables Canada, based in Calgary, Canada and Green Cat Renewables Europe, based in Amersfoort, Netherlands; as well as working alongside our UK based development companies Green Cat Hydrogen, Green Cat Renewable Developments and Green Cat Contracting.
Through the Engineering Department, the company provides Engineering Consultancy and Project Management services to Clients on utility scale wind, solar, BESS, green hydrogen and hybrid projects.
We are searching for a dynamic and experienced Head of Engineering to lead and scale our engineering function across renewable energy projects. This is a senior leadership role, sitting at the heart of the business, driving technical strategy, engineering excellence, and the successful delivery of complex renewable energy assets from concept through to operation.
The Role:
This role is best suited to an experienced leader with a strong interest in mentoring a growing multi-disciplinary Engineering Team. The role will enable the candidate to leverage their knowledge and technical expertise through all phases of project delivery.
Reporting directly to the Operations Director, this role requires a strategic and hands-on approach to ensure the successful execution of projects, while maintaining high engineering standards and fostering innovation.
As Head of Engineering you will:
- Define the technical direction of GCR’s Engineering Department across all technologies.
- Lead and empower Unit Leads across Owner’s Engineering, Project Management, Hydrogen, Design and Business Development.
- Build, scale, and inspire a multidisciplinary engineering team that others want to join.
- Mentor future engineers and create a culture of excellence, ambition, and innovation.
- Act as the senior technical authority on complex, high-value renewable projects.
- Support major projects with your expertise in risk, contracts, budgeting, and delivery strategy.
- Integrate engineering with company-wide strategy — you will be a key member of the leadership team.
- Own the Engineering Department’s financial performance, order book, forecasting, and growth.
- Drive continuous improvement in engineering quality, governance, and best practice.
- Lead business development, winning flagship projects and strengthening relationships with top-tier clients and partners.
- Create and execute a forward-looking Engineering Business Plan that aligns with GCR’s long-term ambitions.
The Ideal Candidate:
- 7+ years of professional experience, out of which 3+ years must be in an Engineering Management capacity.
- Registration as a Chartered Engineer with a relevant professional body.
- Proven experience leading multidisciplinary teams within the renewable sector.
- Exceptional soft skills with the ability to mentor team members and manage internal and external stakeholders effectively.
- Renewable energy industry network including client base and relationships with main project suppliers, contractors, consultants and stakeholders.
- Proven experience delivering projects with CAPEX ≥ £100m from Pre-FEED to operation.
- Experience working with, and managing, a diverse range of technical stakeholders.
- The right to work in the United Kingdom, full-time, in perpetuity.
