Markel International (MINT) are looking for a Data and Insights Analyst to join our Portfolio Development Solutions (PDS) team within our Wholesale Division. You will assist in providing valuable insights, solutions, services and operational improvements across MINT Wholesale through the use of data & insights. The core part of your role will be to improve and augment underwriting and claims enabling data driven decision making. It will also include creating business MI for the various other support functions. Activities include, but are not limited to, data analysis, automation of data flows, creating tooling and visualisation solutions. The PDS team sits across all areas within the Wholesale business, which operates across London and Asian platforms. It is embedded within the underwriting business and is represented within the Wholesale Leadership Team. It concentrates on the areas that are key in achieving profitability and performance targets for a specialty lines insurer: Data and Insights, Portfolio Management and Pricing Model development. The team provides support to the following Divisions within MINT Wholesale: Marine & Energy provides coverage for liability, hull, war, terrorism, specie, cargo risks, all aspects of upstream, midstream and downstream oil and gas activities as well as renewable energy. Professional and Financial Risks (PFR) and Cyber underwrites business worldwide and covers traditional and emerging professional indemnity, management liability, financial institutions, specialist risk areas such as patents and libel & slander, as well as many differing types of business and industry areas for cyber coverage. Trade Credit, Political Risk and Surety (TCPRS) underwrites a variety of trade and investment-related risks using expert knowledge of commercial counterparty and country risks across a wide range of trade sectors and geographies. Equine provides coverage for Bloodstock and Livestock risks worldwide.What you'll be doing: Develop business analytics solutions across all areas of the Wholesale division, supporting the Data, Analytics and Insights pillar in PDS. Design and implement automated reporting solutions. Be an advocate for the utilisation of data to support decision making. Develop strategic tools and practical insights to enable better underwriting and claims decisions that will augment existing processes. Maintain and develop data models using industry standard coding. Maintain and update business intelligence dashboards in Power BI. Source new data and create conformed views of data in the PDS SQL server. Assist in database management and administration. Represent the PDS team, as appropriate, providing accurate and timely management information to MINT leadership, wholesale leadership and meetings as the need arises. Work with other functional areas including: actuarial, IT, finance, underwriting operations, legal and regulatory, compliance, credit control, reinsurance, delegated and underwriting support services to resolve issues and support the achievement of PDS and wholesale business priorities.What we're looking for: Business analytics: Experience creating business insights and automated reporting solutions. Be comfortable working with data visualisation programmes such as Power BI, Tableau or Qlik. Power BI is the tool used at Markel. Experience of coding in DAX, Power Query (M-Language) and creating data models within Power BI preferred. DW experience with Kimball methodology a plus. Database development: Be able to transform and summarise data in SQL. Knowledge of database maintenance and administration a plus. Automation: Have a process improvement mentality. Have experience implementing process automation. Excel: Possess a thorough understanding of Excel and be comfortable with manipulating, analysing and visualising large, complex data sets. Have demonstrable experience in influencing and engaging with business partners using effective communication and interpersonal skills to acquire their consensus. Organised with ability to multi-task.
