Overview Of The Role
The role reports to the Compliance and Business Improvement Partner, and works closely with colleagues from across the business; ESG, Legal and Risk Director, People and Culture Operations Manager, other senior management colleagues, service line leads, and RLB’s core functions to progress the corporate ESG strategy and the social and environmental performance of our operational activities. The role also sits on the Global ESG Committee.
The role leads on all matters relating to corporate responsibility reporting and disclosures – including RLB’s annual ESG report, EcoVadis, ESOS, SECR, UN Global Compact Communications on Progress, and CDP – and will stay abreast of any other mandatory or voluntary disclosures that the business may need to report against in the future.
The role is accountable for RLB’s corporate environmental and social sustainability performance This includes such areas as carbon footprint calculations and verification, driving decarbonisation initiatives, growing the RLB Forest, reducing waste, improving supplier engagement, ensuring ongoing compliance to ISO 14001, increasing utilisation of CSR Days, and all corporate and client Social Value delivery, monitoring and reporting.
This role will have line management responsibility for a Social Value Professional, and an ESG Assistant and will work as part of the wider Compliance team.
Key Responsibilities
Environment
- Lead on the delivery of the UK ESG Strategy and net zero plan, developing a climate transition plan for RLB UK.
- Lead on, and be accountable for, the four-monthly UK carbon data collation, providing guidance to the team in managing the process and in uploading the data onto our carbon data software.
- Take ownership of the Scope 3: Purchased Goods and Services category, improving data granularity and developing a supplier engagement programme.
- Support and provide guidance to RLB Europe core operational teams on Scopes 1, 2 and 3 data collation.
- Calculate carbon offsetting figures, and liaise with offset provider to purchase, in line with RLB’s offsetting strategy.
- Analyse carbon emissions data and understand the narrative behind the data to communicate it to the wider business internally and externally via required reporting and disclosures.
- Highlight any opportunities for improvement, for investment, and any areas of environmental or climate change risk.
- Be the contact and relationship manager for our sustainability partners, including Planet Mark, Green The UK, Anthesis, etc.
- Lead on, and be accountable for, regular internal meetings with the regional Environment Community, ensuring all relevant environmental initiatives are clearly communicated to the Environmental Reps, and any issues communicated back to the central business as appropriate.
- Lead on any mandatory environmental training for RLB UK, developing training resources and creating updates as appropriate.
- As part of the Global ESG Committee, advise and support the global RLB regions on their net zero calculations, verification, reporting and delivery.
Social
Social Value
- Be the joint subject matter expert on Social Value, alongside the Social Value Professional.
- Lead or advise on tender responses for social value and environmental questions, including qualitative narratives, KPIs and costed commitments.
- Use SROI data and feedback to inform future Social Value strategy development and initiatives in the UK and Europe, as appropriate.
CSR
- Lead on, and be accountable for, regular internal meetings with the CSR Community, ensuring all relevant environmental initiatives are clearly communicated to the CSR Reps, and any issues communicated back to the central business as appropriate.
- Enhance the CSR strategy to encourage more engagement with CSR Days and achieving engagement targets.
- Work with the ESG Assistant to develop new volunteering opportunities across the business, and ensure all volunteering is clearly promoted, communicated, tracked and recorded.
- Support the ESG Assistant in delivering the CSR strategy, driving volunteering and fundraising initiatives, and ensuring the accuracy of all CSR data for the UK regions.
- Act as an internal and external representative for our CSR policies and projects.
- Attend Global ESG Committee meetings and support global CSR initiatives, including the Global CSR Awards process.
Governance
- Lead on the annual corporate ESG reporting, ensuring all relevant teams and colleagues are involved and the report is delivered on time. Work with Marketing to promote the report post-publication.
- Manage the SECR section of the Annual Report and Accounts.
- Lead on the annual EcoVadis submission, aiming to achieve Gold certification. Ensure all relevant data and evidence is uploaded on time and of a high quality to improve scores year-on-year. Highlight opportunities for improvement and include in sustainability strategy.
- Lead on annual UN Global Compact Communications on Progress submissions.
- Own and manage the ESOS programme, including annual updates on activities through the MESOS website. Manage each ESOS Phase of works, working with external consultants as necessary.
- Stay abreast of upcoming reporting legislation and inform the business on preparation and resources required, e.g. CSRD, SRS, SBTi.
- Support global regions in the development of their local ESG reporting requirements as appropriate.
- Be accountable for the Environmental Management System and retain certification to ISO 14001. Manage all internal and external audits and timely closure of any non-conformities or recommendations for improvement.
- Be accountable for RLB’s Environmental legal register and keep up to date with relevant legal requirements and best practice (within and outside of our industry), to ensure compliance and drive performance improvements.
- Input into the monthly Operations Report.
General
- Support the bids team in responding to customer specific requirements in tenders and proposals covering social value, net zero, environmental information, supply chain sustainability etc.
- Design and deliver regular communications to the wider business on all matters pertaining to ESG, i.e. present on business updates, writing articles for ConnectUs, delivering internal training etc.
- Establishing measurements and KPIs and reporting quarterly and annually the progress on delivery and performance (including mandatory reporting).
- Working with the Marketing team to ensure effective communication methods are in place to communicate targets and performance.
- Introducing innovations/initiatives to enhance our positive impact and strengthen our customer proposition.
