Established in 1993, GKN Aerospace in Luton is a world leader in commercial and military ice protection systems and transparencies. Offering a full range of capabilities; design, analysis, testing, certification and manufacture of electro-thermal ice protection, military fast jet canopies and flight deck windows to over 20 programmes including: Boeing 787, Dreamliner, Airbus A320, AgustaWestland, AW101, Eurofighter Typhoon and Lockheed, Martin F-22 Raptor. Our customers include Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Bell Helicopters, Textron, BAE Systems, Pratt & Whitney, Leonardo. Our Luton site is home to 400+ employees and onsite facilities including onsite parking, canteen, vending machines and showers.
Job Summary
The Mechanical Maintenance Technician will be based at our Luton site supporting our Civil and Defence business lines whilst reporting to the Facilities & Maintenance Manager within our engineering department. The Maintenance Technician will solve Mechanical Maintenance issues including repairs to the equipment involved in our manufacturing process, without supervision and to a safe standard. The person will be required to work a weekly alternating shift pattern (after training period):
Shift A: Monday to Thursday 6am to 2pm and Friday 6am to 11am.
Shift B: Monday to Thursday 2pm to 10pm and Friday 11am to 4pm.
Job Responsibilities
- Carry out inspections, maintenance and repair of the equipment involved in our manufacturing processes
- Repair plant and equipment during break downs including fault finding
- Conduct minor and assist with major planned preventative (PPM) work including checking, testing and information gathering
- Carry out individual technical administration by the completion of works dockets
- Work in confined spaces and at heights using engineering and building tools
- Follow the WED/Engineering procedures with respect to safety, security and fire policies
- Work flexibly and take on new responsibilities with enthusiasm
- Manufacture, assemble, erect and install new and replacement work
- Conduct mechanical maintenance works or repairs unsupervised
- Carry out mechanical maintenance to Hot and Cold Water Systems and slurry treatment plant and accessories
- Understand the relationship of other craftsmen's work enabling work flexibility within the team
- Carry out periodical servicing, checking and testing of plant and services in accordance with Planned Preventative Maintenance System (PPM)
- Instruct and advise others on aspects of mechanical maintenance work as required
- Undertake new techniques with suitable training as necessary
- Carry out individual technical administration including the completion of works tickets and the filling in of log books in departments
How You'll Contribute
Essential
To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:
- Mechanical NVQ, City & Guilds parts 1-2-3 or Mechanical equivalent qualification
- Experience gained from a Maintenance Technician role within an industrial/manufacturing environment
- Experience of fault finding on plant and machinery
- Experience of adhering to work place H&S policies and procedures
- Experience of PPM (Planned Preventative Maintenance)
- Experience in pneumatics or hydraulics and able to read mechanical drawings
Desirable
- A relevant HNC/HND such as Mechanical Maintenance/Engineering
- Experience of mentoring or coaching more junior team members

The position requires UK National Security Vetting (UKNSV) Security clearance (SC) due to the nature and responsibilities of the work carried out. In order for us to obtain an SC you usually need to have been resident in the UK for a minimum of 5 years to current date (but we do assess each case individually).
