We are a young company, funded by private equity and government contracts, and led by experienced innovators. You’ll join as the Research and Development Team Manager, into a growing team based in Coventry (CV3), with trial locations further afield.
Our technology has many applications across the globe. Together we’ll create beneficial opportunities for change in municipal wastewater, farming, humanitarian relief, military logistics, leisure and many more sectors. Not only will you help create zero emission hydrogen (the fuel of the future) you’ll also aid in the fight against water scarcity, disease, and inequality.

Your Role
You’ll join a growing multidisciplined research team that collaborates to achieve common goals.
Typical duties will include…
Team & Management (15%)
o Collate, align, and present the plan for the research team’s agenda to increase future asset performance.
o Motivate the research team to achieve its agenda.
o Prioritise research team tasks (daily/weekly) e.g. KANBAN.
o Review the team’s progress towards collective performance goals and individual targets.
o Coordinate the team’s planned leave to ensure core skills are available when needed.
Training & Good Practice (5%)
o Encourage the team to upskill in scientific techniques and new fields of study.
o Ensure standard operating procedures for experiments are authored, reviewed, and used.
o Author new standard operating procedures related to your specialist field(s).
o Facilitate regular reviews of papers, articles, and competitor solutions.
Finance (5%)
o Manage the research team’s collective budget.
o Negotiate with laboratory suppliers and services providers critical to the success of research team’s plan.
Experimentation (30%)
o Ensure test cells are maintained and upgraded to support the research team’s plan.
o Prioritise (organise and schedule) the construction of TRL1-5 prototypes.
o Prioritise (organise and schedule) the TRL1-5 prototype trials.
o Manage your own experimental contribution to the research team’s agenda.
o Maintain, improve, and automate data analytics.
o Facilitate formal and informal problem solving.
Funding Opportunities (10%)
o Lead TRL1-5 grant applications, collating input from the team into a coherent and compelling narrative.
o Apply for suitable accelerators that raise the profile of the company / introduce the company to prospective customers.
Academia (5%)
o Engage the academic community to assess which institutions can assist you to achieve the research team’s agenda.
o Identify collaborative project opportunities e.g. hosting PhD’s, shared trials, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP).
(External) Communications (10%)
o Report progress to grant / funded R&D project stakeholders.
o Raise awareness of our company ambitions in forums for climate change, water treatment, and clean energy production.
o Engage with underrepresented communities to encourage diverse applicants for future roles in our company.
Health & Safety (5%)
o Ensure procedures are in place and regularly reviewed.
Risk & Issue management (10%)
o Manage risks and issues as they arise. Maintain logs and prioritise mitigations/resolutions.
Coordination (5%)
o Align the research team’s agenda with the engineering team’s TRL6-7 experimentation and trials to minimise time taken for innovations to reach maturity.
Skill, knowledge, experience
What are we looking to see in an ideal candidate?
- Desirable skills:- Polymer sciences, electrochemistry, software / controls including LabVIEW, electronics engineering, data processing, AI.
- PhD/MSc in relevant engineering or scientific field.
- Three or more years in relevant engineering/scientific field working.
- Ability to effectively plan and execute experiments; and communicate findings effectively.
- Ability to lead a diverse team.
Particulars
Role reports to: CTO
Annual renumeration: £50 - 60k + Pension
Holiday allowance: 25 days + bank holidays + Christmas shutdown
Typical working hours: 37.5 hour per week
