Location: Bristol, UK - Hybrid 2+ days in office per week

Salary: up to £35,000 starting salary with pay increases at 6, 12, and 18 months on successful completion of position objectives.

Graduate Software Engineer

As a Software Engineer at Vaarst you will be working to develop exciting new capabilities for our SubSLAM X2 Camera system, primarily in C++ and Python, employing high quality software engineering principles and practices. You will partner with our R&D team to mature active research into well-tested, production ready code. 

With support from your team, you will contribute towards the design, development and implementation of our products. You will be actively engaged in building high quality solutions through peer reviews, continuous improvement and using our continuous integration pipelines. 

You will gain experience working within large code bases of maturing products, helping you further develop your software engineering skills. You will have the opportunity to participate in field trials to test and evaluate new functionality and support deployment of software updates to customers. Helping shape the technology and processes we use to develop SubSLAM X2’s embedded software, in addition to how it interacts with other components as part of an offshore surveying solution.

We’re looking for an experienced and talented software engineer who has what it takes to make a real impact in this role. (we know it’s tough, but please try to avoid the confidence gap. You don’t have to match all the listed requirements exactly to be considered for this role):

  • Passion for learning and building high quality software
  • Developing modern C++ and Python
  • Good understanding of software engineering principles
  • Experience with software development tooling, such as: Git, Docker, Jenkins and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with automated testing
  • Familiarity with Linux/Ubuntu

Grow together with Vaarst, you may have some knowledge of the following, if you don't these are areas you'll develop in.  

  • Experience of working with ROS
  • Knowledge of Computer Vision Techniques such as SLAM, Visual Odometry, Structure from Motion, Calibration algorithms. 
  • Developing and deploying Robotic Autonomous Systems. 
  • Working with ARM and embedded development
  • Working with hardware devices using serial, I2C, etc. 
  • Working with 3D and Video data, including mesh and point clouds. 
  • Using OpenCV library, PCL, Eigen & Docker 
  • Web frontend technologies, such as: TypeScript, React, Three.js, Electron
