The position: Principal Consultant – Power Systems Engineer


The TNEI Networks and Innovation team assists network companies, governments and regulators with specialist studies, data analysis, and the development of innovative planning tools and services.

We are looking for a full-time Principal Consultant with technical experience and commercial awareness of the GB power system. This role is suited to an experienced power systems engineer keen to work on innovation projects with a focus on project management and technical leadership. The individual should have prior experience in writing proposals for competitive funding applications. As a Principal Consultant, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of our consultancy services. The position offers a good balance between project leadership and strategic planning and development to support the growth of the Innovation business.


Duties and responsibilities will include:


  • Client Management and Consultation:
  • Lead and manage client relationships, ensuring high levels of satisfaction and delivering tailored solutions.
  • Provide expert advice and insights to clients on renewable integration in the GB power system.
  • Project Leadership:
  • Oversee and manage complex consulting projects from inception to completion.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure timely and within-budget delivery.
  • Strategic Planning and Development:
  • Contribute to the development of the innovation strategy and business plans.
  • Identify new business opportunities and areas for growth.
  • Team Management and Mentoring:
  • Lead, mentor, and develop junior consultants and team members.
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
  • Knowledge Sharing and Thought Leadership:
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and developments.
  •  Represent the company at conferences, seminars, and networking events.


Requirements:


Essential requirements include:

  • A PhD degree in Power Systems (or equivalent), or at least 5 years relevant industry experience (if no post-graduate degree).
  • Experience in writing proposals for research and innovation fundings such as Network Innovation Allowance, Strategic Innovation Fund, Innovate UK Grants, Horizon Europe Grants etc.
  • Experience in writing BAU project proposals for clients in the UK and abroad.
  • Experience in writing project reports and leading a team of experts to meet project milestones.
  • Experience of network modelling and analysis in any one of the commercial software packages such as IPSA, DIgSILENT powerfactory and PSCAD.
  • Knowledge of the Great Britain transmission and distribution systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Well-rounded individual with the ability to deliver work individually, or as part of a team.
  • Ability to engage with Clients, forming long term and mutually beneficial relationships.


Desirable requirements include:

  • Expert in python programming and relevant experience in continuous development and integration.
  • Experience with web application development and deploying applications on Azure systems.
  • Knowledge of Git and version control platforms such as Azure DevOps.
  • Commercial awareness and pro-active in seeking out new business opportunities.
