Continuum Industries is on a mission to help rewire the world with cleaner, green energy. We have developed Optioneer, an AI-powered tool that helps plan new infrastructure projects much faster, more sustainably and at lower risk. Since launch, we have supported over 40,000 km of new linear infrastructure - underground and subsea power cables, overhead transmission lines, hydrogen and water pipelines. Our customers include large enterprises like SSE, National Grid, SGN, BP, RWE and Xodus Group.
We're looking for an AI Engineer to join us. You’ll be part of our our engine team; (currently 8 people) comprised of a mix of physicists, mathematicians and electrical/aeronautical engineers based across our Edinburgh and London offices all with a passion for both engineering (all kinds) and technology with a positive impact.
You’ll be working in the space between software development and RnD to both create and enhance our AI engine's capabilities. You'll spend your time researching & developing algorithmic features that will broaden Optioneer's applicability as well as enhancing the precision and efficiency of our current models for improved decision-making. You'll achieve this by collaborating with the wider Engine team to come up with new approaches to existing and newly discovered challenges.
Key Responsibilities
- Research and Development: Design, implement, and optimise AI solutions for Optioneer, ensuring they align with the overall product roadmap and business objectives. To date, we have worked on projects encompassing graph traversal, reinforcement learning, LLMs and evolutionary computing, depending on the need of the project
- Prototyping and Proof of Concept: Rapidly prototype and develop proof of concepts to validate the feasibility of different solutions to difficult problems
- End-to-end development: Take ideas from concept and research all the way to productised, user facing features.
- Maintain and scale: Help develop systems to test and track the performance of our algorithms on both product and testing environments
- Communicate across functions: Collaborate with other teams, specifically customer success, product management and the wider engineering team to gather requirements, understand the problem and communicate pros and cons of different solutions
You'll Bring
- Programming experience: with Python scientific stack (numpy, scipy). Find our full tech stack HERE
- Experimentation: you'll have worked on multiple work streams and have good practical experience in creating and tracking experiments in parallel.
- AI/Machine Learning knowledge: We're looking for someone to add to our knowledge base within AI and bring in a variety of knowledge and understanding across different fields and sub-fields of AI including: Evolutionary computing | Numerical optimisation & optimisation algorithms in general | Hyper-parameter search & optimisation | Other AI/ML algorithms e.g. k-means, decision trees.(Experience in one or more of these areas is critical)
- Software Engineering best practice; this role involves owning what you produce and taking it all the way from inception to deployment so knowledge (and ideally experienc) of testing, documentation, code reviews and other best practices is required.
- Optimisation: Optioneer is growing in terms of scope, scale and functionality as it does the requirements for it to be more performant also increase, you're someone engineers with performance in mind.
Bonus Points For
- High performance Python (numba, JAX, cython, etc)
- Experience in mentoring or coaching
- Involvement in communities outside of study/work
- Published papers
- Experience with MLOps (experiment tracking, model versioning, model monitoring in production)
- HPC (GPU programming, parallel programming)
- Experience with AWS, Kubernetes and/or Docker
What You'll Get
- 💸 £55,000 to £65,000 base salary + equity
- 🌎 Ownership: You’ll own a piece of our company through our share option scheme
- 🤸♂️ Flexible working environment & hours. We're outcome-focused
- 🏖 Annual vacation entitlement: 34 days including local holidays
- 💻 Technology. A brand new Macbook Pro (and work from home budget)
- 🎓 Extensive upskilling opportunities (one dedicated learning day each month + learning budget)
- 🌲 An opportunity to help us accelerate the world’s transition to net zero, and rewire the world with cleaner, green energy.
Our Interview Process
- 30min conversation with our Talent Acquisition team to get to know you better and vice versa.
- 60 min Technical Interview with the Hiring Manager
- Complete at home case study
- Final interview where you'll walk through your case study and cover other technical and behavioural areas.
- Decision
Continuum Industries follows a hybrid work structure where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks or personal work preferences. Working from the office is encouraged for tasks that require a high degree of collaboration. We have offices in London, UK, Edinburgh, UK and New York City, US.
