Tokamak Energy are pleased to be offering a number of Summer placement opportunities to undergraduates who are studying a relevant degree and seeking experience within a commercial Fusion organisation. Our Summer placements offer a fantastic opportunity to work with highly talented individuals and teams, focusing on a focused project or series of small projects and tasks to support our mission and goals.

Overview Of The Chemical Engineering Placement

You will be supporting the Reactor Fuel Modelling Specialist in developing a dynamic fusion fuel cycle model identifying useful metrics of performances and supporting the design of fuel cycle sub-systems whilst establishing the necessary databases to support the development of any models. Additionally, you will be involved with the definition of the key architecture of the fuel cycle and integration against reactor requirements.

Details of the project will include:

  • Development of appropriate databases to support the design of fuel cycle sub-systems and breeder blankets
  • Supporting the selection of an appropriate package for modelling vacuum systems and tracking sensitivity across the model
  • Conducting desktop literature reviews to source appropriate data on hydrogenic & hydrogen isotopologues species physical properties
  • Working closely with the Reactor Fuel Modelling Specialist to troubleshoot key architectural design challenges and driving understanding through metrics of performance

Through this opportunity you will learn and gain an understanding of:

  • The intricacies of modelling a fusion fuel cycle and the challenges associated with a commercial scale fuel cycle
  • Design and development of major fuel cycle process sub-systems and considerations around scale up
  • Development of high-level process flow diagrams and mass and energy balances
  • Requirements definition and bounding conditions for system design
  • Modelling from first principals to understand key phenomena effecting the design of major fuel cycle sub-systems

Requirements

  • Studying a relevant Degree or Masters (Chemical Engineering)
  • Ideally some knowledge of computational modelling and statistical analysis
  • Ideally some knowledge of statistical analysis
  • Motivated and enthusiastic with ability to work independently
  • Good communication skills with ability to work collaboratively with team members
  • Good planning and organisation skills
