Located in NEOM and supporting Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, NGHC will be integrating up to 4GW of onshore solar and wind energy to supply up to 650 tons of green ammonia per day for transportation globally. Operations will go onstream in 2026. NGHC brings together the technology, operational efficiency and know-how of ACWA Power, Air Products and NEOM in a joint-venture partnership with over 80 years of combined experience in the fields of hydrogen, energy, renewables and global networks.

Reports To: BESS Superintendent

Liaise/Cooperate With: NGHC PWEs O&M Team, OEMs, Contractors, APEPC Team, EPMS Team-NGHC EHS Team, GHE O&M & EHS Team.

POSITION SUMMARY

BESS Operation Engineer shall be responsible for managing the operation team of the 450MW Battery Energy Storge System (BESS) in NEOM region. The main objective to ensure smooth, reliable & efficient O&M practices in BESS Plant by ensuring the safety of plant personnel and plant assets.

NATURE & SCOPE

The main functions of this position are:

• Optimised Operation & Maintenance practices of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) along with associated systems & sub systems in compliance with OEM recommendations and approved schematics.
• Actively participate in plant O&M activities, Commissioning activities & safety compliance workshops.
• Enthusiastic to propose the Continuous improvement suggestion to keep elevating the best plant O&M practices.
• Ensure the implementation of the developed O&M system strategies and practices to encourage continuous workflow improvements and increase the asset productivity, efficiency & lifecycle.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES

Quality O&M Practices:

• Prepare & implement the recommended isolation/switching sequence & LOTO procedures for every operation & maintenance activity.
• Ensure that the team be able to monitor, maintained & restore BESS system within the minimum time frame by performing necessary, appropriate & correct troubleshooting methods with quality practices in line with OEM recommendations.
• Periodically review the Standard Operating Procedures & standard Maintenance Procedures; accordingly identify the gaps & implement the proposed approved changes.
• Extend support & supervise the team closely to enable & ensure that the best O&M practices are being followed & well executed.
• Responsible to manage the shift activities i.e., preventive & corrective maintenance by optimizing the proper usage of shift resources (Tools, Equipment’s, spares, consumables & Manpower) in best possible way to optimise the maintenance time, quality & cost.
• Emphasize in proactive (predictive & preventive) maintenance approach to reduce the corrective maintenance.
• Responsible to communicate & generate preliminary incident reports for any events/incident occur in the plant by performing the preliminary analysis & troubleshooting within the time frame.
• Responsible to propose & execute the approved continuous improvement programme, which is contributing to wards safe, reliable, productive & cost-effective O&M practices.
• Responsible to maintain the O&M KPIs above the target benchmarking.
• Proactively Identify the O&M risks & share with them with management to have appropriate mitigation plans in place.
• Actively participating in Monthly review meeting with O&M teams of different PWEs to retrospect & discuss the O&M philosophy & performance key points.
• Actively participate in RCA workshops & support the engineering team in providing the necessary data & documents required for asset failure analysis & review whenever requested.
• Supervise & support the commissioning activities to be performed in compliance with approved procedures, method statements & risk assessment. Raise the punch point if any compliance deviated from its actual standards.
• Perform frequent surprise site audit/inspection to verify the O&M practices are being performed appropriately by site team as per standard procedures.
• Familiarize, guide & monitor the O&M team for effective usage of the Plant CMMS system which will support to build the historical data base for real analytics for every asset.
• Ensure during shift handover all the information has been shared with required accuracy; No communication gap should evolve during shift handover.
• Ensure the contractor is delivering the required maintenance deliverable with quality as per scope of work under maintenance agreement.
• Responsible to respond on time for any emergency call outs requirements.

Team Management & Training:

• Encourage & guide the team to wards best O&M deliverables & how company objective is aligned with each individual employee objective.
• Ensure the team engagement in all training programme as per company training matrix.

Warranty Management:

• Responsible for generating warranty claims of any defect to various suppliers under warranty period.
• Ensure required information; data & documents has been well maintained & timely submitted to supplier if requested.

Spare Part Management:

• Ensure that the spare part storage condition has been maintained in accordance with OEM storage condition recommendations.
• Keep close eye on critical spare part & consumable availability in warehouse to avoid any down time or delay in equipment restoration/maintenance due to absence of spare part at site.

Reporting Matrix & Documentation:

• Regularly audit the Maintenance team in order check & ensure that relevant documents records are well maintained in line with O&M agreement & OEM recommendations.
• Responsible to properly managing the plant maintenance records.
• Immediately report any plant issues to his line manager and concerned department as per communication matrix within the time frame along with possible root cause, restoration plan & future preventive/ predictive actions plan.

Interdepartmental Communication & Coordination:

• Extend the required support & proper communication to other departments & PWEs in timely manner to ensure smooth & effective operation of the company.
• Closely coordinate with EPMS team to smoothen the BESS system operation philosophy alignment with respective to other PWEs (Solar & Wind) operations.
• Keep close & necessary Interaction with site operation & maintenance team to avoid communication gap & delay in equipment restoration.

HSSE:

• Ensure the O&M team & sub-contractors/ suppliers obtained PTW for each job and monitor them onsite for HSE compliances mitigations.
• Engage with site team for identification of new hazards from ongoing tasks or any new task.
• Participate/ Assist to review/ revise the task risk assessment (TRA) time to time.
• Participate actively in emergency response plan as per approved ERP.
• Support in executing the emergency response drills.
• Assist when needed in the HSE incidents/ accident investigation.
• Ensures PTW’s for all activities are issued as per approved WMSRA/ PTW/LOTO system.
• Ensures the isolations/ deisolation and LOTO applications are applied as per SLD/ switching sequence.
• Control and manage site EHS conditions by imposing and applying NGHC-EHS policies and procedures.
• Verify the isolation & LOTO procedure for critical maintenance activities.

SKILLS / TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AREAS:

• Professional in Microsoft Operating System (MS office).
• Electric/Electronic components fundamental knowledge for basic testing & troubleshooting analysis.
• Leadership skill, negotiation skills & interpersonal skills.
• Proactively describe the Plant Performance Issues in short & effective way to management.
• Knowledge of Battery Energy Storage System Operation & Maintenance philosophy.
• Knowledge of different battery chemistry types & their maintenance strategy.
• Knowledge of BESS technology challenge such as response time, battery discharging & charging cycles etc.
• Advanced analytical, technical skills.
• Knowledge of BESS system electrical & electronics components along with their testing equipment’s.
• Deliverables on Time, Leadership & Adaptability: - Be Enthusiastic & energetic to provide required deliverable within the time frame with quality standard.
• Lead & guide his team in line with company objectives & deliverables.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

• A Bachelor’s degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering with minimum 7+ years of experience in BESS system & leading the team of technicians/operator within a BESS system capacity greater & equal to 50MW.
• Specialized in Battery Energy Storage System, MV/HV system Operations, Switching sequence preparations, Plant Performance report preparation & analytics.
• He must have a Sound knowledge on electrical system such as Power Transformers, BESS system, Substation (GIS), Inverters, RMUs, PV- technology etc.
