Senior Demand Modelling Analyst will be part of the British Gas Energy Commercial Team. The Role
We are looking for a Senior Demand Modelling Analyst to join our analytical and commercially important team.
A truly exciting opportunity, you will play a key part in developing best-in-industry energy forecasting models. These models are critical in reducing commodity imbalances and hedging costs, ultimately creating value and insight for our customers, and contributing to our Energy 2.0 roadmap.
Role Objectives: To make further strides in our Demand Forecasting (DF) roadmap, we need a Senior Demand Modelling Analyst who will be instrumental in delivering cutting-edge models and insights. The role and the DF team's modelling roadmap focus on delivering in three key areas:
Cost Reduction Through Better Accuracy: Enhance model accuracy to reduce costs associated with commodity imbalances.
Growth by Supporting the Development of New Propositions: Aid in the development of new energy propositions to drive growth.
Market Readiness for EHHS and MWHHS: Ensure models and strategies are aligned with the market readiness requirements for the Energy Half-Hourly Settlement (EHHS) and Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MWHHS).
Your key daily responsibilities will be:
- Developing and maintaining models and algorithms to accurately forecast gas and power demand of millions of British Gas customers.
- Playing an active role in setting the direction of the Modelling and Analytics team by planning key projects that can deliver tangible commercial value to the company. Alongside in also supporting with the production and utilisation of analytical tools to constantly monitor and visualise the quality of forecasting Models.
- Take ownership of unlocking technical solutions necessary for the team’s activities through a strong relationship with Centrica Group and British Gas IT departments such as solution and cloud architects.
- Carry out in-depth analysis and setup enduring automated processes to provide visualisation and business intelligence to relevant customers/stakeholders; by unlocking the power of big data.
- Reducing energy imbalance cost by bringing commercial and cost focus to forecasting models and processes and improving efficiency of operational processes through automation.
- Shared ownership of delivering gas and power demand forecasts for UK residential and business customers to hedging and 24/7 shift teams.
- Within all aspects of the role put the customer at the heart of decision making and support the team’s ambition to lead on the digital transformation.
- Role requires developing core relationships with colleagues across the business such as Energy trading team (CE), British Gas Business (BGB) and British Gas Energy commercial teams. There is also an opportunity to work closely with MI, smart metering, data science, finance, billings, industry settlement, debt, Hive and other teams to enhance the role’s impact.
- Actively collaborate with range of external counterparties for modelling research and innovation projects presenting excellent opportunity for working on big data, data modelling and cutting-edge customer and commercial analytics.
We are keen to see candidates who are highly numerate and have good analytical skills. You will have experience of statistical modelling and be comfortable using varied analytical techniques on large data sets. Experience with Excel is essential and with SQL, Python and/or Spark, Machine learning and modelling is necessary. Previous exposure to working with cloud environments such as MS Azure or AWS is also advantageous.
In addition, job holder should demonstrate a keen passion and interest for energy as well as doing what is right for the customer, whilst meeting our commercial and net-zero targets for the future. Higher education (bachelor’s or master’s degree) in numerical field is preferred.
