This role of Data Operations Analyst will sit within the Energy Transition team but will support the work of all other Programmes and Innovation teams. Much of P&I’s work is to enable the development of an affordable, user centric, flexible, and zero carbon global energy systems. Teams do this through taking a whole system thinking approach underpinned by innovation, impartiality, and robust evidence generation. The Energy Transition team in particular is focused on a wide range of energy transition topics, including early coal retirement mechanisms, grid innovation, accelerating the adoption of energy flexibility, understanding the role of hydrogen, and energy market policy and regulation development. These areas highlight the wide range of work where data support is needed in order to strategically delivery key projects, and business development, at the Carbon Trust.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and bright individual, ideally with a data management/science background, but would welcome other applicants as well where there are clear skills around data management and data systems.

Main duties and responsibilities:
- Setting up and maintaining a database of relevant data (accessible, open access and under open licence (commercially exploitable) to be used in ET and P&I projects in a priority established based on key needs.
- Data acquisition, handling, and updating in key focus areas such as electricity generation data, pricing data (electricity, gas, coal etc.).
- Data acquisition of other structured datasets e.g., generation and network assets
- Performing data cleansing and formatting of datasets where some programming skills (primarily Python) may be required
- Development and updating of data (and associated metadata) documentation that is easily accessible and digestible for all users
- Engagement with stakeholder and relationship management where needed to support data provision and management
- Involvement and interest in non-data related work in P&I as to be a better advisor to end users, where data management remains the primary function
- Working with data, including modelling and data visualisation, to generate insights and client recommendations
- Engaging and coordinating with relevant IT and Business Services colleagues for a cohesive data management strategy
- Helping P&I teams to develop new propositions and increase its impact across the sectors in which we work
- Contributing to business development and knowledge management (e.g., support with impact pieces and dissemination through data insights)
Key skills, experience and qualifications we are looking for:
Essential
- Motivated by the challenge of achieving net zero economies and translating this interest into action and outcomes
- Degree educated (or equivalent), ideally in energy transition related topics where data management / science / programming formed a key part of development
- Excellent qualitative and quantitative analytical and problem-solving skills
- Persistence and creativity in approaching complex problems
- Ability to interpret data in easily digestible language and outputs that are accessible to end users
- Fluent spoken and written English (other languages are an advantage)
- Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain productive relationships and influence decision-making
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues in a team environment, and to work on multiple data management tasks across a given period
- Ability to think and work independently, taking the initiative and ‘ownership’ of tasks and showing creativity
- Ability to use MS Excel for high level analysis, data management, and extraction of key insights
- Experience in using MS PowerPoint and Word for communication and report writing
Desirable
- Qualification focusing on energy systems, policy, technology or sustainability.
- Knowledge / experience of energy transition and sustainability issues.
- Understanding of energy market planning and operations, including recent market developments and changes.
- Experience using Power BI and other MS data tools to enhance data management.
- Leadership and initiative to progress overall data operations at the Carbon Trust.
Salary & Benefits:
We offer a competitive salary and a performance based bonus. Our hours are 37.5 per week with 28 days paid holiday plus bank holidays and a generous pension scheme.
