Job Overview
The Marina Operative plays a vital role ensuring that our marina facilities are safe, well-maintained, and operating to the highest standard. This hands-on role is responsible for the upkeep and repair of marina infrastructure, equipment, and services, contributing to a high-quality environment for customers and the wider community.
The Marina is open 7 days a week so the contracted 37.5 hours could be across all 7 days with a predicted one in 2 or 3 weekends working.
The Marina Operative will assist in the day-to-day operations of the marina, ensuring excellent customer service, safety, and the efficient maintenance of the site. This hands-on role involves varied duties, from assisting berth holders and visitors to ensuring the upkeep of the marina facilities and compliance with safety standards.
The Marina Operative delivers a variety of operations and services that include vessel handling such as lifting, launching, high-pressure washing and the storage of vessels ashore, and the berthing and movement of vessels on the water in accordance with company policy.
Responsibilities
The main duties of the role are:
Routine Maintenance
- Perform routine maintenance tasks on marina equipment and facilities including general repairs using hand and power tools.
- Identify and report any repairs or hazards promptly.
- Assist with the implementation of environmental and sustainability initiatives.
Customer & Team Support
- Work as part of "One Team", assisting marina colleagues with operational tasks when required.
- Respond professionally to customer maintenance requests and concerns, ensuring minimal disruption to their experience.
- Liaise with contractors and suppliers, ensuring work is completed to a high standard.
- Contribute to marina events and community activities where required.
- Welcome and assist berth holders and visitors, ensuring a positive experience.
- Provide information about the marina’s facilities, local amenities, and services.
- Address customer queries and concerns promptly and professionally.
Marina Operations
- Assist with berthing and unberthing vessels, including line handling.
- Conduct daily checks on pontoons, moorings, and vessels for safety and security.
- Monitor and maintain the cleanliness and presentation of all marina areas.
- Moving a range of different boats around the site
- Operate marina workboat as required
- Towing or retrieving pontoons
Third Parties
- Supporting third parties (eg contractors or dredging crew) as required
- Ensuring third parties know, understand and comply with the marina rules and procedures, particularly regarding health and safety
Lifting and Machinery
- According to the equipment on site, you may be required to operate a range of boatyard machinery
- Engine lifts and mast removal duties operating plant machinery.
- Moving boats in and out the dry stack and loading and unloading these vessels onto the dry stacks.
- Slinging and banking –moving a large range of heavy equipment and boats around a boatyard.
General
- Cleaning down vessels to prepare them for anti-fouling, to be stored, general maintenance, or on request from berth holders.
- Regularly clearing up the marina keeping it visually pleasing and within strict Health and safety guidelines.
- Carrying out a wide range of customer service duties both face to face and via telephone.
- Launching and landing vessels as well as parking the client’s vessel in the designated berth.
- Building and the construction of pontoons as well as the breakdown and recycling of older pontoons to be re used.
- Using a high-powered jet washer jet washing down marine equipment
- Other general hands-on tasks as directed by the Marina Manager
Health and Safety
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety policies and procedures.
- Respond to emergencies, including first aid or oil spill response, as required.
- Participate in regular safety drills and training sessions.
Administration
- Record operational data, including berth allocations and visitor bookings.
- Update Harbour Assist
- Supporting with site check paperwork.
- Handle financial transactions for services such as fuel or visitor fees, following company procedures.
- Support the marina team with other administrative tasks as needed.
- Maintaining timesheets and other information as required by the company and/or Marina Manager
Other
- Other tasks reasonably within the scope of the role
- Knowledge sharing and upskilling other team members
- Training as required by the role
Essential Skills & Experience
- Powerboat Level 2 qualification
- Experience in general maintenance, facilities management, or a skilled trade (e.g., electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanics).
- Ability to work in an often physically demanding environment
- A willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.A proactive, hands-on approach with strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently, taking responsibility for routine and reactive maintenance.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills, reflecting a "One Team" mindset.
Desirable Skills & Experience:
- Experience working in marina operations or marine facilities maintenance
- Knowledge of health and safety best practices in a marine or facilities setting.
- Other marine-related qualifications.
- First Aid at Work certification.
- Knowledge of environmental best practices in marina operations.
