Job Title: Engineering Manager- Hydrogen technology
Location: London, UK
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager with a strong process engineering background to lead the technical delivery of our hydrogen projects – from early-stage lab concepts, through pilot plant operations, to full-scale commercial plant commissioning. You will oversee multidisciplinary engineering teams, work closely with R&D and operations, and ensure projects are executed on time, within budget, and to the highest safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the engineering function for hydrogen technology development and deployment.
- Oversee the technical progression of projects from lab-scale prototypes → pilot plants → commercial plant commissioning.
- Provide process engineering expertise in hydrogen production, storage, purification, or utilisation systems (e.g., electrolysis, fuel cells, ammonia cracking, etc.).
- Develop and review process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), mass and energy balances, and other key engineering deliverables.
- Lead hazard and operability studies (HAZOP), safety reviews, and ensure compliance with UK and international standards for hydrogen systems.
- Manage relationships with EPC contractors, equipment suppliers, and external engineering partners.
- Drive continuous improvement and scale-up strategies to optimise efficiency, cost, and safety.
- Support plant commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance optimisation activities.
- Mentor and develop engineering staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
- Contribute to project planning, budgeting, and resource allocation.
Key Requirements
- Degree-qualified in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline (Chartered Engineer status desirable).
- Proven experience taking industrial processes from laboratory scale through to commercial plant commissioning – ideally in hydrogen, industrial gases, energy, carbon capture technologies or chemical processing.
- Strong knowledge of hydrogen technologies and related safety standards (ATEX, PED, etc.).
- Experience with process simulation tools (e.g., Aspen HYSYS, gPROMS, COMSOL) and engineering design packages.
- Demonstrated success in managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and delivering complex technical projects.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with experience interfacing between technical and commercial teams.
- Strong understanding of UK permitting, regulatory frameworks, and industry best practices for hydrogen and chemical plant projects.
