Sustainability Manager – Highways & Infrastructure | South Wales

engstaff-In are proud to be representing a leading highways and infrastructure business operating across South Wales, currently seeking a talented and driven Sustainability Manager.
This pivotal role will lead the organisation’s carbon strategy driving measurable progress toward net zero goals and embedding sustainable practices across all operations.
Purpose of the Role
As Sustainability Manager, you will develop and implement a comprehensive carbon reduction programme to reduce energy use and environmental impact across property, fleet, and highway assets.
You will provide expert insight into climate science, policy, and sustainability technologies while collaborating across internal and external stakeholders to meet Welsh Government carbon reduction targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and delivery of the company’s carbon and sustainability strategy.
- Implement sustainable methods for managing property, fleet, and highway assets.
- Advise on climate change policy, technologies, and environmental interventions.
- Monitor legislation and Welsh Government policy to assess operational impacts.
- Build strong partnerships and networks to deliver sustainability outcomes.
- Develop business cases, bids, and proposals to secure Welsh Government and external funding.
- Report on carbon performance metrics and ensure transparent data-driven decision making.
Experience
Essential:
- Significant management level experience leading high performing teams and complex operations in a relevant field.
- Proven track record in developing and delivering energy and carbon management projects, including business case preparation, funding applications, and energy efficiency programmes.
- Experience conducting carbon appraisals, audits, feasibility studies, and life cycle assessments, and managing corporate carbon reporting.
- Strong background in carbon accounting, data analysis, and use of data visualisation tools to communicate complex findings.
- Skilled in developing and implementing sustainability strategies, policies, and campaigns.
- Evidence of effective collaboration and partnership working with external stakeholders to deliver outcomes and milestones.
- Ability to provide expert technical advice on energy legislation, policy, and operational practices to support corporate carbon targets.
- Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant technical or environmental discipline.
- Membership of a relevant professional body.
- Strong understanding of climate change mitigation and adaptation, and ability to communicate this effectively to diverse audiences.
- Detailed knowledge of carbon management, renewable energy, and large scale energy efficiency initiatives.
- Deep understanding of measurable strategies to reduce environmental impact and carbon footprint.
Desirable:
- Experience in procurement and contract management.
- Proven success delivering projects on time and within budget in challenging financial contexts.
