Design Safety Engineering – Hydrogen / High-Pressure Systems
Are you passionate about building safe, innovative energy technology and want to see your ideas become real world solutions?
We’re seeking a Design Safety Engineer to play a central role in developing next-generation thermochemical and hydrogen-based processing systems.
You’ll work as part of a highly focused technical team responsible for taking novel high-pressure, hydrogen and syngas equipment from concept → prototype → pilot plant → first-of-a-kind commercial deployment.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys a high level of technical autonomy, thrives in a fast-moving environment, and wants to influence the design of pioneering clean-energy hardware.
What you’ll be doing
• Leading design risk assessments and ensuring compliance with DSEAR, ATEX, PED and PSSR for hydrogen and high-pressure thermal systems.
• Identifying safety concerns in new equipment designs and proposing pragmatic solutions.
• Supporting prototype development and working closely with manufacturing teams.
• Designing and specifying safety systems, control strategies and protective measures for hydrogen and syngas processing equipment.
• Developing and reviewing P&IDs, safety studies, HAZOPs and process-safety documentation.
• Ensuring all designs meet pressure-systems requirements, including written schemes of examination and certification-body documentation.
• Supporting the safe design and layout of pilot-plant units, modular skids, enclosures and zoning.
• Interfacing with regulators, notified bodies and third-party assessors.
• Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to a proactive, safety-first engineering culture.
What we’re looking for
• Mechanical, Chemical or Process Engineering degree (BEng/MEng).
• Several years experience in process-safety, hydrogen systems or high-pressure gas design.
• Strong working knowledge of DSEAR, ATEX, PSSR and PED.
• Expertise in hydrogen systems design, valves, containment, instrumentation and pressure-relief hardware.
• Experience leading safety reviews (HAZOP, LOPA, risk assessments).
• Comfortable working onsite in a Cambridge-based engineering environment (with c. 2 days a week home working)
• Bonus: experience with pilot plants, modular process systems, waste-to-fuel technologies, ISO 12100, functional safety (IEC 61508 / SIL), or 3D CAD tools.
If you want to help shape the next generation of clean-energy processing technology and enjoy hands-on involvement across design, build, test and safety assurance, we’d love to hear from you.
