Transport for London (TfL) Engineers are always looking forward. There’s more to it than trains, trams, buses and ferries - this is about connecting communities and creating opportunities, so we’re ready for the rest of the 21st century and beyond.
TfL Engineering is designed as a matrix organisation and, as such, Engineers are deployed into specific assignments. You will develop and implement engineering solutions safely, and within cost limitations. Day-to-day, your focus will be on delivering designs, drawings, root cause analyses, safety justifications, change assurance papers, information, calculations and enhancements that keep vital assets moving and innovative and big-budget projects on track. You’ll make sure our vehicle assets are safe, reliable and compliant, developing your own solutions using your own initiative, sometimes with guidance from your more experienced peers.
Whilst it is desirable that you have proven electrical engineering-related technical expertise in rail vehicle engineering, we are looking for an electrical Engineer that has experience in one or more of the following areas so that the successful candidate can be deployed into relevant assignments:

- On-train and train-track wired and wireless communication systems;
- Electronics or software design for Rolling Stock;
- Electrical installation best practice, testing and fault finding;
- Electromagnetic Compatibility for equipment on Rolling Stock;
- Technical support for commercial specifications.
You’ll need to have worked within an engineering role previously and be aware, through personal interest, of recent developments and best practices in public transport and rolling stock. On an individual level, it’s your passionate proactivity, confident dealings with internal and external stakeholders and clear focus on the commercial impact of your work that will set you apart.
Essential Skills, Knowledge And Experience
- Degree in electrical engineering (or closely aligned discipline) and might be working towards engineering Chartership, or;
- equivalent apprentice route qualification (at Level 4) with suitable experience in a relevant industry and might be working towards professional recognition, or;
- sector experience that demonstrates an equivalent level of engineering competence to the above.
- Demonstratable experience of technical delivery in an Engineering environment.
- The ability to analyse multiple, complex data to draw conclusions and produce well-presented reports.
- Experience of applying professional engineering judgement to support low risk / complexity projects or operational activities.
- Building relationships with, and influencing, a wide range of stakeholders at all levels within and outside of the organisation.
It’s important you bring a passion for the TfL Vision and strategy too. That’s because, wherever you join us, you’ll explore work of unparalleled scale, scope and variety across a unique range of assets and projects, as you build your career and expertise. We have a flexible approach to work with a balance of office, site and home working that can take account of external demands on your time but this is very much dependant on the area of work that you are assigned into. So come and bring on tomorrow, as a Vehicles Engineer at TfL.
